A REDISCOVERY Halyna Zacharjasevych-Lypa, an artist of abundant talent in the field of graphics, a master in batik art, an imagina tive writer — will soon be rediscovered in the free world through the efforts of Stefania Hnatenko, who is in the process of writing and publishing a book about the artist’s work. In an article about the artist (Nashe Zsyt- tja, June 1988, Ukrainian text), Mrs. Hnatenko pignantly explains the harsh circumstances of Halyna Lypa’s rela tively unknown existence. “The artist lived and created during the complicated times during the war and in the years after in Western Ukraine. These were times when the muses were silent, while the politicians did all the dictating. The lot of one individual can reflect the fate of an entire generation.” Halyna Lypa was the wife of Jurij Lypa, a noted humanist, physician, poet, writer, whose unpopularity with the political regime cast a dark shadow of persecu tion and rejection from the official art circles on the efforts of the artist. She was born in a small village called Rachynja in Western Ukraine on May 28th, 1910. She studied Archi tecture at the Lwiw Polytechnic Institute and Art in Vienna and graduated with honors. Because she was multitalented, Halyna also studied piano as well as voice with the legendary Solomeja Krushelnycky. Unfortu nately, her vocal cords were damaged during surgery and she had to give up a promising singing career. Halyna Lypa began to develop her artistic individual expression in the field of batik art through her job in a textile company. Into this area she brought her passion ate interest in Ukrainian ethnography and folklore. A series of outstanding work in various techniques such as aquarele and batik was called “Hutsulszchyna” which demonstrates the aritst’s sensitivity and understanding of history, culture and customs. She was also very fond of illustrating Ukrainian songs. She had a vivid imagina tion and love of children's fairy tales which she created, wrote the text and illustrated. Another facet of her talent was the drawing of greeting cards. La*. Галина Захарясевич-Липа, ілюстрація до казки за схід ними мотивами, яку авторка склала сама 1960 p., папір, перо, кольорова туш.
