The Ukrainian Community all over the world will shortly celebrate 1 000 ye ars o f C h ris tia n ity in U krain e. UNWLA has planned several projects with which to commemo rate this auspicious observance. It was decided to give fin a n c ia l s u p p o rt to Dr. S o fia S e n y k to h e lp h e r p ublish “The H is to ry o f The U k ra in ia n C h u rc h " in E n glish ; to s u p p o rt the U k ra in ia n M u s e u m in the p re p a ra tio n a n d the m o u n tin g o f the ex h ib itio n s — U k ra in ia n icons, a n d m o d e rn U k ra in ia n re lig io u s p a in tin g s , as w e ll as to help w ith the p u b lic a tio n o f s u p p o rtin g ca talo gu es . Unfortu nately, the New York Council on the Arts did not honor the Museum’s grant proposal for these projects. All Branches of UNWLA, those with new members as well as newly formed Branches can all join in and participate in these projects. S h o u ld n ’t these p ro g ra m s serve as e n c o u ra g e m e n t to U k ra in ia n w om en to jo in the ra n k s o f o u r o rg a n iz a tio n and in this structured group celebrate this unprecedented historical occasion. A second, very important resolution of the XXI Con vention is the u p h o ld in g o f a ll the re s o lu tio n s o f the p re v io u s co n v e n tio n s , as well as upholding the decision of the National Board that B ran ch es are re sp on s ilbe for the 100 p e rc e n t m e m b e rs h ip Subscription o f O U R LIFE . Shouldn’t we be proud of the fact that we have a maga zine of such longevity? Recently I was present at the semi-annual meeting of the Board of the National Council of Women of the United States, which sporadically publishes a bulletin of activities. President of the National Council, Mrs. Betti Salzman, while introducing me to the Board members said, that I head an organization which founded a small, but beautiful museum and which publishes, consistently, for a period of 44 years its own magazine. She pres ented our organization as one which does not spare effort nor money to preserve its image and prestige. I, with a gracious smile of thanks, thought to myself, “If only you ladies knew how much trouble we have with our beautiful magazine, financing it, publishing it, and mainly convincing our members that subscribing to it is a directive of our By-Laws.” I am sure that the members of the Board of the National Council of Women could not possibly conceive of the fact that among our UNWLA members there are those, who for one reason or another, do not subscribe to the magazine. For the National Council of Women, whether their news bulletin is pub lished or not, is not a matter of great concern. American women have a great many publications. But, for us, that is a different matter ......... I would like to focus attention on one more impor tant matter which was unanimously accepted by the delegates of the XXI Convention, and that is that B ra n c h e s s h o u ld o n ly s u p p o rt causes w hich U N W L A o ffers as p a rt o f its o v e ra ll p ro g ra m , c o n c u rre n t with C o n v e n tio n re so lution s a n d a p p ro v e d b y the N a tio n a l B o ard. The financial reorganization of UNWLA has been in progress for over 14 years. Great strides forward have been made in that time, yet from reports it is evident that Branches often support projects which have no ties to our organization. At this point I turn to the presidents of the Regional Councils and admonish you that your responsibility is to see that the programs of our organization are carried out. You are the executive arm of the National Board. Rumors were circulating that there is no contact between the Executive Board and the Branches. To remedy that, members of the Board decided to go into the “field", so to speak, mainly to visit Branches on their anniversaries, or simply when invited, to establish a rapport and exchange of ideas. Branches which are located far from UNWLA centers will not be forgotten, and the Board will be in constant contact with them. If and when at the end of this term we can boast of a 10 p e rc e n t m e m b e rs h ip increase, a 100 p e rc e n t m e m b e rs h ip s u b s c rip tio n to O U R L IF E , and when the goa ls o f o u r o rg a n iza tio n assu m e p rim a ry p la c e in o u r w ork, then with a clear conscience we can come to the next convention and say that o u r jo b m e t w ith a cro w n in g success.
