DIRECTIONS FOR UNWLA THE NEXT THREE YEARS. (Address delivered by Mrs. Maria Savchak, President of UNWLA at the October 24, 1987 meeting of the National Board of UNWLA). This is the first post-convention meeting, hence it is necessary to formulate a plan of action for our organiza tion for this term, which is for the next three years. The direction of our plan is to assume Vvas given to us by the Convention through the passage of resolutions, those of general concern and those slated toward particular chairmanships. The Convention underlined the fact that women have great strength are a serious influence on events of historical significance when their actions are directed through organizations. It was decided that during this term, each October will be a month of an intensive membership drive. We are all aware that the fu n d a m e n ta l s tren gth o f a n y o rg a n iz a tio n lies in its m e m b e rs h ip . If the organiza tion is working to realize its goals and secure its future, it must have a continued influx of new members. Our chairmanships operate with various results — some are successful, others less so. The ranks of UNWLA are increasing, but at a rather slow rate and that must be changed. What is the reason for this slow increase? I feel th ere is little u n d e rs ta n d in g fo r the w ork o f the m e m b e r ship c h airm an sh ip, th e re fo re we all m u st ch ip in to help. It is my opinion that the membership chairmen on all three levels (national, regional and local) should have a vigorous cooperative relationship with the press chairmen. With their help the o rg a n iz a tio n a n d its w ork s h o u ld be a d v e rtis e d c o n tin u a lly in the p ress — in the g e n e ra l U k ra in ia n press a n d in O U R LIF E . Each suc cessful event, each Branch initiative should be used as a means of attracting new members. When we examine the past record of our organiza tion, we see that our achievements were hardly mun dane — the d e v e lo p m e n t o f the U k ra in ia n M u s e u m a n d o u r c o n tin u o u s ca re fo r its g ro w th ; our wide net of activ ities which encompass the s c h o la rs h ip a n d s o c ia l w e l fare actions; our efforts in the field of p u b lic re la tion s; within a span of six years the organization of tw o very succ es sfu l c o n fe re n c e s “U k ra in ia n W om an in Two W orlds"; publishing activities, the most prominents of which is the 4 4 -y e a r h is to ry o f the p u b lic a tio n o f O U R L IF E , the o n ly U k ra in ia n w o m e n ’s m a g a z in e in the U n i te d S tates, and a source of pride to our members. Why not, then take into account just these few accomplish ments (and there are many more) and use them to ad ve rtise o u r o rg a n iza tio n to g e t n e w m e m b ersh ip . Cont. "THE R IG H T TO BE PR O U D ” age the enrollment of your children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the pre-schools established by the UNWLA and give them the pride of knowinganother language. The Ukrainian Museum in New York City also mer its everyone’s support for the preservation of our price less heritage. The Museum continuously draws visitors from all over the world through well publicized articles in the news media; and if we are to continue in perpe tuating our historical past, we must give our Museum the financial and moral support it rightly deserves. Fund raising events for the benefit of the Ukrainian Museum in New York are of great importance and we urge you to consider such events. The UNWLA’s involvement with the National Coun cil of Women/USA, and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, has provided our organization with the opportunity to tell the different member organizations about the plight of our Ukrainian people — as our own “unforgettable” holocaust — the 1932-33 Great Famine in Ukraine — and the more recent nuclear disaster in Chornobil. We must never let the World forget the hard ships endured by Ukrainians. If we expect to grow as other ethnic groups have and maintain a presence within the American scene, it is our responsibility to be actively involved, to act in numbers and have our voices heard in the halls of Congress — for in numbers there is power! My membership in the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America has not only given me lifelong friendships but a vast learning experience. In fact, I have the best of two worlds — for not only am I a good American but a better Ukrainian as well. I am glad for the decision made by my parents to come to this great country where freedom of speech is enjoyed by all. I know, I am not alone in feeling “the right to be proud.” ’’НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИСТОПАД 1987 23
