ABOUT WOMEN THE CAREER W O M A N ’S DISEASE. Endometriosis is a disease which may afflict as many as 10 million women in the United States. It also is a major cause of infertility. Because is has been asso ciated with delayed childbearing, the disease is some times called the “career woman’s disease.” The condition is caused by the spread and growth of tissue from the lining of the uterus (or endometrium) beyond the uterine walls. This tissue forms patches or scars throughout the pelvic area, causing a variety of symptoms, discomfort and pain. The origins of the dis ease in individual patients vary, and researchers have not been able to pinpoint the cause. They do know, however, that once the disease starts, it gets progres sively worse. There are remedies, from drug treatments to surgery, which in most cases alleviate the problem, but it cannot be treated until it is diagnosed. Many women expe riencing severe cramps during menstrual periods, as sume their condition is normal. Its basis was a suit brought by a man from Santa Clara County Transportation Agency, who was passed over for a promotion in favor of a woman with a lower score in a competetive testing process. The decision was hailed as a major victory by women’s rights and civil rights groups. Their prediction is that shortly public and private employers will adopt plans that favor women over men in hiring, promotions and layoffs.
