Summon the lion within you and bellow. Let the black clawing roar surround This universal enclosure, leading your mind Into a fairy glade where memories prickle like awns. Where the years are burnt stubble And where your woes, insatiable hyenas, Sharpen their fangs and claws for you. Summon the lion within you and rage Among the bolts, bars, and locks: The world is flowering with stubble And barbed wire. Hide within the cooper mountain, Conceal the arrogant blue. A shadow trumpets above me, And a shadow fill in every step. Hide within the horizon’s oboes And whisper: I am still alive. A thunder of resurrection on the mountain Is being announced for me. Smash your fists against despair, Hiding within the copper mountain. Vasyl’ Stus was born in 1938 near Vinnytsia. He was a sympathizer of the dissident movement, and arrested for the first time in 1972, at the age of 34. After nine months of imprisonment and interrogation in Kiev, he was sent to the Mordovian camps for 5 years. He lived in exile in Kolyma from 1977. Released in 1979, he was arrested again in 1980 and sentenced to prison for 15 years. He died on September 4, 1985 without hope of ever return ing to freedom. On January 21, 1987 the U n io n F a v o rin g In te rn a tio n a l Solidarity, based in Hamburg, West Germany, sponsored a program dedicated to the memory and creativity of Vasyl Stus. In her opening remarks, Gella Jurgens, a member of the Union, reflected upon the harsh fate of Ukrainian writers and cultural activists in Ukraine who VASYL’ STUS (1938-1985) That memory: of nightfall, wind and grief the youthful and intrusive body entered the doorway, flung a robe in haste across the backrest of a chair then delicately went up and up and up the mortal eyepiece until a keening rose above the roof. The window’s big and blue. The yellow shutters are negligently drawn. The table’s black and cowering. The glass on it is trembling, the sides are thin and resonant. Only that nightfall and the wind and grief and you, like clottings of a youthful clamor — all scintillate beneath the midnight sun and keep me from returning to stillness. Poems were published in Focus On Ukraine, Digest of the Soviet Press, December 1985. felt it was their duty to try to save Ukrainian language and culture from the encroaching russification. The speaker underlined Stus’ uncompromising position on all official rules within the Soviet system which negated human rights and the constitution. Dr. E. Wolfheim, a noted Slavic scholar, addressed the creativity of the poet. She spoke about the universal ity of his message and said that the strength of his expressions is so powerful, they loose nothing in Ger man translation. A collection of Vasyl’ Stus’ poems (about 120) from his last collection of poetry Palim psests, will be pub lished in German at the end of this year.
