5. to instruct the Regional Councils to hold annual seminars on all aspects of the By-Laws and parliamen tary procedures. 6. Since the perpetuation of the Ukrainian heritage has always been the goal of our English speaking Branches, and since our heritage is is reflected in our ancestral background which is several generations removed from the motherland, we feel that our needs and focus should be addressed by a specific initiative to be instituted by the UNWLA for English speaking Branches and that concrete ways of resolving these issues should be sought. ARTS AND CULTURE CHAIR 1. In view of the fact that in 1988 we will celebrate 1000 years of Christianity in Ukraine, it is necessary to pre pare a program which will afford the membership an in- depth understanding of the history and significance of this event for our nation. 2. Considering that the knowledge of the Ukrainian lan guage and that studies of all aspects of Ukrainian cul ture are essential to the preservation of our national indentity, it is necessary: a) to arrange for courses of the Ukrainian lan guage on all levels of proficiency and in keeping with the latest educational methods. b) to conduct a campaign which will support the use of the Ukrainian language in organizations and in personal life. c) to promote the reading of Ukrainian books among members; specifically, to organize book shows, to hold book readings during Branch meet ings; to initiate new and revitalize existing book clubs; to organize literary meetings, inviting au thors and knowledgeable individuals from various fields of Ukrainian studies as guest speakers. 3. It is vital to keep track of and acquaint members with contemporary cultural events and developments in U- kraine. 4. It is important to study the history of the Ukrainian immigration in the United States, particularly about the contributions the immigrants made to the cultural deve lopment of this country and make this imformation accessible to the American community. 5. The contributions of women to the history and cul ture of the nation should be noted and commemorated annually in March. 6. Proper selections of Ukrainian music should be inclu ded in Ukrainian radio programming. Care should also be taken that only performances adhereing to the high est standards are presented, particularly before audien ces other than Ukrainians. 7. Monitoring and informing members about the pro gress of various projects envisioned in the course of the Women’s Decade is advised. EDUCATION CHAIR I. Increased emphasis should be given to the organiza tion of pre-school nurseries, which serve as an impor tant sphere of influence in raising children in the Ukrainian spirit. The following is recommended: 1) Bi-lingualism which acts positively in the intel lectual development of a child should be appre ciated and nurtured. 2) Branches which do not as yet have projected goals, should be encouraged to work on the development of topical games for children. 3) It is important to provide cassette tapes in the Ukrainian language with various content (fairy tales, music, etc.). 4) Information such as films, books, games, cas sette tapes, records, etc., which would be helpful to anyone raising a Ukrainian child should be pub lished in OUR LIFE magazine or in an independ ent brochure. 5) In communities where there are no pre-school nurseries, an informative meeting should be ar ranged for the mothers and their children. 6) There should be cooperation with Ukrainian studies schools. “Career Days” should be organ ized, with Ukrainian professionals and merchants as speakers. II. Courses on how to run pre-school nurseries should be provided, supervised by teachers trained in the latest methods of pre-school education. III. Lectures on educational themes should be provided for parents. IV. Children should be urged to take part in the contest sponsored by Branch 64, commemorting the Millenium of Christianity in Ukraine. V. Funds should be raised to help publish educational resources. THE CONVENTION UPHOLDS THE RESOLUTIONS OF PREVIOUS CONVENTIONS AND RECOMMENDS: 1. Give greater attention to organizing pre-school nurseries which are an important factor in educat ing children in the Ukrainian spirit. 2. Provide educational lectures for parents. 3. Raise funds to support the publication of ap propriate books for pre-school children, as well as instructional material for the teachers. WELFARE CHAIR 1. Support the Medical Aid Fund for Children and Youth. 2. Address problems pertaining to the support of the elderly and people who are alone, especially our mem bers. 3.
