NEWS FROM UNWLA HEADQUARTERS SCHOLARSHIP COMMISSION UPDATE: • The UNWLA Scholarship Commission now boasts two new members, Nadia Nynka and Liuba Sira, both of UNWLA Branch 4 in New Brunswick, NJ. • A SPECIAL THANKS ... to UNWLA members of New Jersey, for planning “Ukrainians for Ukrainian Stu dents”, an event that took place in various locations throughout the state. The purpose was to acquaint the Ukrainian community with the UNWLA Scholarship Program. The idea and initiative for this project were provided by Olha Trytiak, president of UNWLA Regional Board in New Jersey and Oksana Kuzmak, chairman of the Cultural Committee. SOCIAL WELFARE COMMISSION UPDATE: • At the end of 1985, members of the UNWLA Social Welfare Commission — Oksana Lopatynsky and Halyna Oberyshyn — prepared parcels containing tape cassettes with recordings of Ukrainian carols, songs and fairy tales for children, as well as copies of Our Life magazine. Thanks to the generous donations of the fol lowing UNWLA Branches: 7, 21, 38, 47, 64, 66, 69, 71, 83, 100, we were able to cover the shipping costs. The parcels were sent to various schools and dormitories in Brazil and Argentina. Over the last few months many thank-you letters have arrived from the children and teachers who received these parcels. Here, in translation, are just a few: ... Dear UNWLA Executive Board, My sincere thanks to you for the cassettes, I am happily learning the Ukrainian songs on them. I’m reading with great interest about your organization’s accomplishments in the magazines you have sent... ... We received the cassettes and copies of Our Life magazine. The cassettes will certainly serve our youngs ters well in their schooling. The magazines are eagerly read by young and old alike, the embroidery patterns are certainly greatly appreciated. ... We received your parcels of cassettes and copies of Our Life magazine. No sooner did I boast of their arrival than the anxious swarmed around me like bees. Need less to say, everything has been distributed! NEW BRANCH OF UNWLA FORMED New York, April 10, 1986 — a new branch of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America was formed in New York City in December 1985. Branch 113 has 21 founding members at the present time and was organized by Luba Firchuk and Irena Steckiv Bechtold, president and vice-president respectively. Membership of the new branch consists primarily of Ukrainian women in the work force in such diversified professions as journalism, advertising, promotion, per sonnel, travel, real-estate, graphic arts, fashion, teach ing, administration, library science, chemistry, stock- brokerage, electronics and retail sales. Among the goals of Branch 113 are the propagation of the Ukrainian cause in American media; promotion of Ukrainian artists; counselling for students; networking for young professionals; assistance for senior citizens; fundraising for the Ukrainian Museum; and most impor tantly, the building of an awareness among the Ameri can populace that Ukrainians are many-faceted, multi talented, successful, contributing members of the Ame rican community. To accomplish these goals the Branch is formulating plans for a number of functions, among them participa tion in the 7th Street Festival in May, an art exhibition by Ukrainian women artists, an arts and crafts bazaar, and a dinner/dance. The support and participation of the Ukrainian community in these events will be greatly appreciated. Branch 113 meets once a month at the UNWLA head quarters, 108 Second Ave., New York. New members are most welcome.
