THE LITERARY FUND of LESIA and PETRO KOVALIW Supporting and maintaining a fund is a prestigious, as well as, a responsible undertaking. In the late 1960’s the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America was entrusted with this task by Lesia and Petro Kovaliw, whose generous financial grant served as the basis for a new Ukrainian literary fund. The Lesia and Petro Kovaliw Fund is dedicated to rewarding excellence in literature. In particular, the emphasis is on the best in fiction, in the form of a histor ical or short story novel based upon a historical theme and on a scholarly work on a historical subject (mono graph). Both categories must be based upon some aspect of Ukrainian history. Literary funds such as the one described here are invaluable because they promote the enlightenment and cultural growth of a nation. We, Ukrainians are in the unfortunate position of having to compile the libraries of our knowledge and creativity without the benefit of government support and far from out native land and sources. Therefore, one marvels at the sensitivity and farsightedness of people such as Lesia and Petro Ko valiw, who understood this problem and did something to remedy it. Petro and Lesia Kovaliw were born in Ukraine in the late 1890’s. They emigrated in 1920 and settled in Gen eva, Switzerland where Petro completed his studies in chemical engineering. Both were very active in the Ukrainian community, contributing articles to Ukrainian publications and providing financial aid. To mark the 50th anniversary of their marriage, Petro and Lesia Kovaliw established a fund to support research and encourage the creative spirit of Ukrainian scholars. The distribution of monetary awards in the Lesia and Petro Kovaliw Fund is based on the results of a Literary Contest. Entries are evaluated by a panel of judges according to the rules of the Contest. The distinguished panel for the VII LITERARY CONTEST, which had as its deadline December 31, 1985, consisted of Professor Jaroslav Pelenskyj —chair man: Professor Zenovia Sochor and Professor Oleh Fedyshyn. In an unanimous decision they chose the fol lowing winning entries: Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році . A рхів C У A - Ню Йорк , Н . Й . C Ш A.
