for the younger generation; new professional networks and old established volunteer organizations must be mobilized to save women’s rights; the problem of pov erty must be put before the problem of pornography; the myth of equality in divorce must be dispelled; the differences between men and women must be reaffirmed, but men and women must work together to iron out their problems; the fight for real political power must continue. Election bickering — Philipp ine style The election campaign between incumbent Presi dent Ferdinand E. Marcos of the Philippines and his opponent, Mrs. Corazon C. Aquino, has been hot and heavy from the start. Now Imelda Marcos joined the bat tle, calling her husband’s opponent “a complete oppo site of what a woman should be.” Mr. Marcos himself accused Mrs. Aquino of a lack of femininity, while she said he was not manly. When asked what is an ideal woman, the Philippine president replied: “someone gen tle, who does not challenge a man, but who keeps her criticisms to herself and teaches her husband only in the bedroom.” Explosion at PEN The 48th International PEN Congress had to face reality with a “kick in the seat of its pants” when a women’s caucus criticized the “underrepresentation of women” in the panels. The congress, held in New York City in January 1986 witnessed a near rebellion by a group of women, about 200 of them, who protested the exclusion of women from the heart of the congress. There were only 7 women out of 53 honored guests and 16 women out of 117 panelists. The formal protest statement read: “We are out raged at PEN’s failure to invite more women writers from all parts of the world to be panelists, readers, and moderators at this conference discussing imagination and the State. There are many women writers of interna tional status from the U. S. and abroad who could have spoken to the issues which were addressed by the panel.” Author Norman Mailer, president of American PEN did acknowledge that there was an imbalance of men to women at the meeting. But when it came to the hono- rees, well this is what Mr. Mailer said, “There are more men who are deeply interested in intellectual matters than women.” U N W LA S C H O L A R S H IP P R O G R A M U pdate Thanks to the donations of our generous benefac tors in the USA, Canada and Australia, the UNWLA Scholarship Fund was able to forward assistance to needy Ukrainian students in South America and Europe. Your contributiens enabled 530 students to complete yet another school year. Students in Number of stipends Amounts Brazil 444 $82,475.00 Argentina/Paraguay 47 6,500.00 Europe 39 6,070.00 Total $95,045.00 Over one-half of the scholarship recipients were in grades 5 to 12, most of them lived in dormitories during the school year. Others were students of various col leges and universities majoring in: teaching, theology, philosophy, agronomy, engineering, medicine, dentis try, law, art, journalism, accounting, administration, computer programming, nursing, etc. We also helped students attending trade schools. All of our scholsrship recipients are highly recommended. Most are the child ren of poor Ukrainian farmers who live in colonies in Brazil and Argentina. Some are even abandoned because their parents cannot support them. The effects of the severe drought of 1985 will be most keenly felt by these farmers, because of this we anticipate many new applications in 1986. A couple of years ago, these people suffered greatly due to exten sive flooding. For them the loss of two harvests in the same year is devastating.
