OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America EQUALITY DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE The symbol of the United Nations Decade for Women: Equality, Development and Peace. It was designed by Valerie Pettis of Henry Dreyfuss Associates. On July 15, 1985 the World Conference to Review and Appraise the Achievements of the UNITED NATIONS DECADE FOR WOMEN will open in Nairobi, Kenya. As its title proclaims, the Conference will attempt to assess the advancements of women during the Decade and to single out the obstructions which hindered the full reali zation of its goals. Upon completion of this review, the Conference will set new strategies and formulate poli cies which will promote a smoother path toward imple menting the aims of the Decade to the year 2000. Leticia R. Shahani, Assistant Secretary-General for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs has been appointed Secretary-General for the Conference. She expresses her ideas and hopes for the Conference in this way: ’’This Conference is the culminating interna tional event of the United Nations Decade for Women. Its significance is enormous: dealing as it does with half the world’s population, some two billion four hundred human beings who, be they destitute women farmers struggling for a living to support their families or women pioneering in the field of science, affect in a most fun damental way the rest of humanity. Many problems remain unsolved, but undeniably the Decade has been instrumental in making govern ments and the public at large recognize the importance and magnitude of women’s role in society. The coming Nairobi Conference will build on the experience of the Decade and adopt comprehensive and forward-looking strategies to ensure that women, in their multiple roles, can take their rightful place in society on an equal basis with men. Women, as public figures, individuals, wives and mothers, have a stake in shaping the future. May this Conference serve as the catalyst which will usher in a dynamic, progressive and enlightened era in which women can contribute to and benefit from the sum total of humanity’s aspirations and achievements." Preparation and participation The Preparatory Body for the Conference is a 32 member inter-governmental Commission on the Status of Women, a United Nations’ agency. In 1983 an extensive questi onnaire was distributed to governments covering all aspects of women’s situations at the national level. These questionnaires, by now completed and returned, were analyzed and reviewed by the United Nations and will form the basis of the main document for consideration for the Conference Assembly.
