WOMEN IN THE NEWS — conf. Eleanor Rooselvelt — Stamp marks centennial. A 20-cent stamp marking the 100th anniversary of Elea nor Roosevelt’s birth was issued on October 11th by the United States Post Office. This is the second U.S. com memorative stamp honoring Mrs. Roosevelt. The first stamp was issued in 1960. Other nations which have issued stamps honoring Eleanor Roosevelt are Venezu ela, Hungary, China, Ethiopia, Israel, Jamaica, Korea, Panama, Poland, Colombia, El Salvador and Sudan. REACHING OUT As a historian I am especially sensitive to people rein venting the wheel. You have elected me to coordinate our relations with the outside world. Much of the work will be centered in our participation in the National Council of Women and through it, in the International Council of Women. The American Council will be host ing the celebrations honoring the centenary of this old est women’s international organization, scheduled to be held in Washington in 1988. Because the UNWLA is on the executive board of NCW, we will be able to have an active input in the proceedings, and I will keep you informed of what is happening. However, most of the work, the nitty-gritty public relations — is already being done, and can only be done locally in branches of our organization and by individu als. A few years ago Camilla Smorodsky compiled a list of suggestions on how to set up contacts with the local press, the local library and, in this election year, I like to particularly stress, contacts with candidates for local, state and national offices. Political campaigns offer us a chance to become involved in our communities and to help the candidates of our choice. Such involvement is important to us as citizens and crucial for us as Ukrainians, repre sentatives of a particular heritage. Only through our active engagement in local community affairs can we become a force in that community. I will use this column to maintain contact with our membership and to recommend possible activities. I am anxious to see what type of activities are being pursued by the branches so that I may be an informed represen tative of UNWLA. You are the ones who make UNWLA happen and you are its representatives in the communi ties. I would like very much for this to be your column, to hear your suggestions, to share your experiences with all our readers. For my part, so that we do not go on reinventing those wheels on which we tread, I propose to set up an advisory group of persons who are interested in local, state and national politics and community matters. I ask for volunteers as well as nominations for this particular network. I see our organization much like a web, each branch doing similar work in a different locality, but jointly bringing pressure where need be. The center is the trunk from which branches grow — but the branches are the hubs of life that give substance to the center. I also like to point out that the above proposed informal body of concerned individuals need not be limited to members of UNWLA exclusively. This may be a good way of reaching out to women not affiliated with any organizations, who are interested in having a say in Ukrainian matters. Therefore, write to OUR LIFE maga zine explaining what you or your branch is doing, or think should be done in our contacts with the broad community. I would also appreciate receiving the names of persons who might be particularly interested in this type of broad public relations. The historian in me surfaces again. Newspapers of old always had practical suggestion and I can’t help but offer a few. I trust UNWLA members have registered to vote, have remembered to vote and have been visible citizens of our country. After the election, congratulate the winner and remind that individual of the support he/she received from our organization. Ask what more you can do to help him or her to do the job well. Finally, let me thank you for your trust in electing me to the vice-presidency of UNWLA. With your active cooperation we can make our organization an even stronger force in our communities and in our country.
