PEOPLE Talent is an inborn ability or aptitude, as defined in Webster’s dictionary. Some realize this gift early in life, others experiment, testing their abilities in various forms of self expression. When that perfect match is made, the result is awesome, to say the least. Ina Dzerovych is an artist who has found her per fect art form — ceramics, Ukrainian style. “As far back as I can remember I was always inter ested in Ukrainian folk art,” writes Ina in her much too modest biographical sketch which I asked her to send for this article. "Mostly, my interest leaned toward embroidery, as well as collecting designs from the dif ferent regions of Ukraine. In New Hampshire, where I now live, an acquaintance introduced me to ceramics and shortly moved away, leaving me to search out and develop my own designs and colors.” Tremendously excited about her new “hobby”, Ina tackled all the Ukrainian art books which she could get her hands on to learn as much as possible about ceram ics. She took a course about the technical aspects of the art form, and discovered that the making and deco rating of pottery as a hobby is very wide spread in the United States. Schools and organizations which foster this artistic expression issue publications, arrange exhi bits on local and state levels and award prizes for win ning entries. Flower pot and vase display Hutzul designs from the Ina Dze rovych collection. Last year Ina Dzerovych won her first blue ribbon at the Granite State Ceramics Association Show in Con cord, New Hampshire. Her winning ceramic piece fea tured a Hutzul design. This summer she added another blue ribbon to her collection, as well as the coveted “Freddy” award. This is a national award and is the most sought after prize in hobby ceramic competitions in the United States. Ina received this award for a vase deco rated with Hutzul motiffs. The merits of a ceramic entry are judged on the following points: cleanliness of the greenware (basic preparation for painting of the raw piece), placement of a design, the originality of a design and how it relates to the shape and size of the object it decorates, and the execution of the design. Tripillyan designs adorn two vases, products of Ina’s crafts manship. 22 НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ—ЖОВТЕНЬ 1984 Hutzul motiffs adorn jug, showing Ina's close attention to detail.
