7. Provide information about the work being done at the Museum. Encourage people in communities, Ukrain ian schools and youth organizations to make use of the programs provided by the Museum. EDUCATIONAL 1. Devote a greater effort to organizing nursery schools (switlychky) since they are very important in raising our children in the Ukrainian spirit. Also organize nursery schools for children who do not speak Ukrainian. 2. Arrange seminars for parents where the subject of raising and educating children can be discussed. 3. Encourage children to take part in a literary contest sponsored by Branch 64 of UNWLA, marking the 1000 years of Christianity in the Ukraine. 4. Campaign for funds to be used for the publication of children’s books which can also be used by pre school teachers. WELFARE 1. Continue to help The Grandmothers who are spon sored by UNWLA Branches. 2. Continue the scholarship program and send food and clothing to the needy in Europe and South America. 3. Direct attention to the welfare needs of your local communities. 4. Branches of our organization should create centers which would serve as sources of information about state and federal aid for the needy and elderly. 5. Seek out ill and elderly Ukrainians in hospitals and nursing homes and visit them on a regular basis. 6. Organize “Life line” programs — these are telephone contacts with elderly individuals who live alone. 7. Organize activity groups for the elderly. 8. Support the federally sponsored program of “talking books” for the blind and advertise it in our communi ties. Also support a similar, but privately sponsored program of such books in the Ukrainian language. This is a vital program which does not have full fed eral support. 9. Investigate all possibilities in securing state and fed eral aid for programs which will benefit the needy in Ukrainian communities. PUBLIC RELATIONS 1. Investigate the possibility of contact with ethnic wo men’s organizations. 2. Support programs and acts sponsored by the Ukrain ian community at large through letters and meetings with senators and congressmen. 3. Urge Regional Councils to become members of The General Federation of Women’s Clubs in their states and to take part in their conventions. 4. Join American political parties, participate actively and through participation provide information about the plight of Ukraine and about our communities in the United States. Urge all Ukrainians who are eligi ble to vote to do so. Candidates are respectful of groups which provide many votes. THE PRESS The XX Convention underlines the necessity of continu ing the publication of OUR LIFE magazine. It is vital not only to UNWLA membership, but also to the general public. The Convention urges the following: 1. In order to increase the number of readers the maga zine must provide articles dealing with an interesting variety of topics, especially those which would be of interest to young women. 2. Increase the number of English language pages in the magazine. 3. It is the responsibility of the press secretary to collect subscription dues for OUR LIFE, to fill out the neces sary forms and send both to the administration office of the magazine. In case a Branch does not have a press secretary, this duty is assumed by the financial secretary. 4. Regional press secretaries are urged to contribute articles to OUR LIFE dealing with activities of their regions. These articles should be based on informa tion provided by Branches. The responsibility for such articles and their timely arrival at the magazine, belongs to the president of each Regional Council. Individual Branches may contribute their activity report to the magazine once a year. 5. Support OUR LIFE magazine by encouraging new subscriptions, by collecting funds for the Press and Reserve Fund and by organizing special activities, proceeds from which will benefit the magazine. 6. Initiate educational seminars for press secretaries within Regional Councils. Such seminars must be conducted on a professional level. 7. A Regional Council press secretary and Branch press secretaries are urged to hold frequent meetings to gether. Also it is important to initiate press commit tees which will function within regions. FINANCE Due to the unstable economic situation which has an enormous effect on the realization of our plans and pro jects, it is necessary for UNWLA to raise the standards of our financial activity. The Convention therefore proposes: 1. To raise membership dues in Branches to $15.00 per year; members-at-large to $30.00 per year. 2. To raise Branch dues to the organization by twenty percent. 3. Make the subscription cost to OUR LIFE collectible with membership dues by the Branches. Cont. on p. 24 НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ—ЖОВТЕНЬ 1984 21
