OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America GIANT IN OUR MIDST Among noted Ukrainians who have markedly con tributed to the welfare of our nation, one individual stands out for his exemplary character, illustrious lifes tyle, dedication and love for his country and people. Metropolitan Andrej Sheptytsky, aristocrat by birth, bro ther to every Ukrainian by choice, he embraced our nation in the noble spirit of Christian love and fierce patriotism. He was a giant among men. Handsome, elegant, educated, a noble prince of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, he was a power to be reckoned with. All his life he struggled with Soviet imperialism to recapture and retain the God-given rights of our people to national sovereignty and freedom to worship The Almighty. Metropolitan Sheptytsky died on November 1, 1944. We honor his holy memory and marvel at the great achievements of his life. He knowledge, gentleness, advice and goodwill touched every aspect of Ukrainian existence everywhere and will remain with us for eternity. In 1958 a book entitled “Western Ukraine under the Bolsheviks 1939-1941” was published by Shevchenko Scientific Society in the USA, Inc., with materials com piled by Milena Rudnycka. As an introduction to the work is a short article about the true nature of Bolshe vism written by Metropolitan Sheptytsky on October 6, 1941 in Lviv, expressly for his book, then in stages of research by the author. The following are excerpts from this article: “The aim of the state is to guarantee that families as well as individual citizens have the opportunity to make a good life for themselves and be happy. The sanction of life, material wealth and all rights of citizenship is the fundamental duty of any state, for without such obliga tions a state cannot be considered as such. What is called the Bolshevik state is very far removed from this basic concept, since not a hint of the underlying, prim ary functions of statehood can be found within it. The ruling government faction has no consideration for material wealth nor welfare of the people. From their actions they deem themselves superior, with the popula tion destined to serve them, rather than the other way around. Metropolitan Andrej Sheptytsky Because the citizens of USSR are so burdened with the severity of their laws and the cruel attitude of their government, their status almost equals that of the con demned awaiting the death penalty. Under the Bolshevik rule all are condemned to death, even those who faith fully serve the system. The entire social organizm, the whole population withers and loses strength in the at mosphere of bolshevism, as if seeing the despair of hell itslef — death, which comes with total weakness, with hunger, with loss of blood. This is an atmosphere which defies life. This atmosphere is the direct consequence of Marxism, a state system which makes robots out of people, insensitive to their rights or needs. Rulers of the USSR add the absurdity of atheism to Marxism in a form most repugnant to the natrual order of human life, to the principles of organized existence, to society at large, to family. This atheism is like sand slipped into the gears of a well oiled machine, or a new poisonous gas added to the already Marxism-poluted atmosphere which hastens the death of each organism.”
