generous contributions to Ukrainian institutions and they worked for the promotion of Ukrainian independ ence in the United States, sending delegates to Washing ton and organizing rallies and demonstrations. Moreover, these immigrants founded their own institutions, built churches, schools, and national homes that would re spond to their own needs as well as ensure the preser vation of their heritage in the new land. Although the main emphasis of the exhibition is on the period before the 1940s, the large influx of Ukrain ian immigrants after the Second World War had such a great impact on the Ukrainian community in the United States that some of their achievements have been in corporated in the exhibition. These post-war immigrants are now making their own invaluable contributions and carrying on the work of the earlier settlers. Comprising the exhibition are 200 photographs that were selected from some 1,500 photographs that the Museum was able to collect over a three-year period as part of a project initiated in 1981. The exhibition has been divided into the following categories, making it as comprehensive a representa tion of Ukrainian immigration in the United States as possible: The European Experience (Історичні шляхи укра їнців в Европі) The American Experience (Історичний шлях укра їнців в Америці) The Religious Response (Церковне життя) The Fraternal Benefit Response (Діяльність Брат ських союзів) The Political Response) (Політична діяльність) The Cultural Response) (Культурна діяльність) The Ukrainian Press and Publications (Українська преса і видавнича діяльність) The Ukrainian American Woman (Українсько-аме- риканські жіночі організації) Business and Professions (Підприємства, коопера тивний рух, професіонали) In Defense of America (В обороні Америки) From Generation to Generation (Від покоління до покоління) Guest curator for the exhibition was Dr. Myron Kuropas, who wrote the text of the catalogue; co-curator was Chrystyna Pevna, Museum Archivist. The exhibition was made possible by the donation and loan of photographs from individuals as well as Ukrainian institutions and organizations. Members of the Ukrainian Women’s League of American in particu lar, helped to collect photographs in their respective communities. The photographs on exhibition are reproduced in the exhibition catalogue which has been published in separate Ukrainian and English editions.
