Welfare encourages some people to put off looking for jobs. Others, in order to achieve their ultimate goal of earning money, tend to spend less time with their families. This is a disease of our society. A disease which puts us on a treadmill; for when we reach a set financial goal, there is always someone else, with still more money, whom we must overcome. As a result, there is less time left to spend with our families, resulting in many a disjointed family. There is little time left for community, and we tend to abandon the or ganizations we have belonged to in the past. Our children grow up outside the Ukrainian community, and often regret not being taught “who and whose they are.” Unfortunately, by being exposed to the discord that at times seems to exist between our organizations, our young people are often discouraged from joining them. This too is due to procrastination-the putting off dealing with the differences only seats them more securely and hatred is born. We cannot turn back time, but we can learn from the past: not to procrastinate, to live a full life, and feel responsible towards ourselves, our families and our country. U.L. ST. JOHN’S SOCIAL SERVICES FOR In 1977, Branch 75 of Souz Ukrainok of Maplewood, filed an application to ACTION, a federal agency, for a mini-grant, in order to expedite a senior citizen project. The branch was very concerned about our senior citizens and wanted to do something to help the needy. In order to become more informed about Social Services available for senior citizens, several members of the branch visited various agencies in Essex County. In February 1977, the branch received $2000.00 from the federal agency for our project that was formally named “Aid to Ukrainian Senior Citizens.” And so we started to prepare for our opening of the informational bureau. We rented a store front, painted and furnished it. The “bureau” was opened three times a week and there was a 24 hour hot line available. Branch members gathered pertinent information for Senior Citizens and we had them professionally translated and printed. Seniors would come to the bureau with questions and problems and the members would take them to the various agencies. A social service committee was forming at St. John’s Church. On October 5, 1977, St. John’s Social Services for Senior Citizens was officially opened. The purpose of the organization was to provide social, recreational, educational, religious, and charit able functions for the benefit of our senior citizens. The Center is opened Monday and Wednesday from noon to 3:00 P.M. Informative sessions are held relative to social security, welfare, medical and other government assistance programs as well as classes for arts and crafts. President of the Club organizes tours and recreational activities during the year. All the members are remembered with birthday and get-well cards. Monthly birthday parties are held as well as holiday parties. The sick and disabled are visited. All persons 55 or older are eligible to become active members and need not be members of St. John’s Church. To date there are approximately 200 registered members.
