HEALTH & WELLBEING By Dr. Maria Motyl ASPIRIN CAN BE LETHAL When a child develops a fever as a result of a viral infection, mothers commonly administer aspirin. That may, however, be precisely the wrong thing to do. The Center for Disease Control esti mates that between 600 to 1200 cases of Reye syndrome occur annually in the U.S. First recognized almost two de cades ago, Reye syndrome is a rare, a- cute, life-threatening condition charac terized by vomiting and lethargy. This may progress to delirium and coma. Most frequently it occurs in children bet ween the ages of 5 to 16 who are recov ering from viral infections, especially in fluenza and chicken pox. Death occurs in 20 to 30% of reported cases and some permament brain damage has also been reported. For many years there has been a suggestion that Reye syndrome is as sociated with prior use of common medi cations. Case control studies have re cently shown the association to be bet ween prior ingestion of aspirin and other salicylates and Reye syndrome. The Sur geon General of the U.S. thus advises against the use of these medications for children with influenza or chicken pox. NEW ACNE DRUG DEVELOPED Many Americans remember the agony of acne when they were growing up. Con trary to popular opinion, neither scrub bing the face, nor cutting out fatty foods really gets rid of acne. For some, antibi otics such as tetracycline may be effec tive. In most cases acne disappears after puberty. In some it doesn’t go away, and the deep carbuncles remain for years, developing into pits and scars. For years researchers knew that a deficiency in vitamin A could produce a skin disease similar to acne. Applied to the skin, vitamin A itself was useful only in very mild cases. However, synthetic derivatives called retinoids proved very effective. Recently a drug came on the market that may do away with even the most dif ficult cases of acne. The drug, called Ac cutane, is marketed by Hoffman-La Roche. Patients take the capsules orally over a several month period. The main side effect appears to be chapping and drying of the skin and mucous mem branes. At this point, however, the FDA has approved the drug in the most se vere recalcitrant cases of acne at least until more data is available. CRYING IS GOOD FOR YOU Of all mammals, human beings are the only ones that shed tears as a result of emotional stress. Very little is known about this particularly human behavior. Recently, an investigator suggested that tears help relieve stress by ridding the body of potentially harmful stress-in duced biochemicals. Similarly, other processes such as sweating, exhaling, or urinating, release toxic substances from the body. Some preliminary data sup porting this theory shows that tears have higher protein content when they are shed as a result of emotional upset, than INGREDIENTS: 1 1/2 cups finely crunched Zwie- bach cookies or Graham Crackers 2 teaspoons butter — melted 2 teaspoons sugar 2 8-oz packages cream cheese — room temperature 1 cup sugar 5 eggs — separated 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 teaspoon lemon juice — freshly squeezed 8 oz sour cream Blend crumbs with butter and sugar. Press into bottom of greased 9 inch when they are shed as a result of an irri tation such as cutting an onion. In a further correlation between stress and tears, people with disorders known to result from stress, such as ul cers and colitis, are more likely to con sider crying a sign of personal weakness than people with other disorders. For example, in today’s society it is not con sidered appropriate for men to show emotions and to cry in public. In fact re searchers have shown that women cry on the average of five times as often as men do. Men are more prone to many stress-induced disorders than women and die, on the average, at a younger age than women. While these facts cannot be attri buted solely to man’s lack of the ability to show emotions in public, the mother who admonishes her little boy to keep his feelings inside and never to cry is probably causing him more harm than good. spring form pan. Beat softened cream cheese add 1 cup sugar and cream well. Add unbeatened egg yolks, one at a time. Stir in sour cream, vanilla and le mon juice. Set aside. In a separate bowl beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. Fold egg whites into cream cheese mix ture — very gently. Pour into spring form pan. Bake in preheated oven — 300 degrees for 1 hour. Turn off oven but allow cake to remain inside for another hour. Open oven door but do not take out cake for another 1/2 hour. Allow to cool at room temperature for 2 to 3 hours. Refri gerate overnight.
