OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women's League of America VOL. XL JANUARY 1983 EDITED BY A. H. Sawyckyj Editorial BETWEEN PAST AND FUTURE The New Year seems to appear unexpectedly. Pages fall off the calendar and we are astonished to be looking at the very last one with the number 31. Although nothing basically changes in our lives, we feel that something has happened. We seem to stop for a moment to reflect on that which has passed and on that which we would like to see happen in the coming year. Many magazines enumerate the more important events of the year in their year-end issues. Crimes, fires, catastrophes, calamities and wars are all vividly re called. Yet other events seem to overpower these horrors, such as the bravery of the 29-year-old man who jumped onto the subway tracks to save a blind man who had fallen there. We are also reminded on the ca tastrophe in Washington, where a young man extended his hand to a drowning man. Such events strengthen our belief in the inherent goodness of man. And yet there seem to be so few of these events. But the fact remains that a young man jumped to save a blind man without thinking of himself first. The action was reflexive and automatic; to him it was the natural thing to do. If a young child is taught to think of himself first and only then to notice others then that person will always be egocentric and an egotist. Yet one can teach a child as well as oneself to love his neighbor and his country. We need but to look at our heroes, who even under the worst of conditions manage to help each other, giving each other support and strength, feeling an inner satisfaction and sure that they are following the right path. Looking back, we evaluate events and also our own gains and losses. And thus we set our goals for the New Year. Looking back we ask ourselves — what have we learned from the past? How should we go on — will we extend our hand to others or will we still walk our separate ways, although claiming that our goal is one and the same. Translated by M. Jarymowycz INCREASE OF SUBSCRIPTION OF “OUR LIFE” MAGAZINE As of January 1, 1983 the subscription of “Our Life” magazine has been increased to $15.00. Due to the high cost of printing and mailing, the Executive Committee of U N WLA was forced to increase the subscription of ‘Our Life” in order to insure its continued existence. COUNTRIES OTHER THAN U.S. (with exception of South America) may send the subscription in their cur rency, which will equal the amount of $15.00 American dollars. We would greatly appreciate receiving additional $2.00 from those subscribers who already paid $13.00 for the 1983 subscription. НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ, СІЧЕНЬ 1983 23
