OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America VOL. XXXIX DECEMBER 1982 EDITED BY A. H. Sawyckyj ARE WE NEEDED, AND BY WHOM? Living a life full of everyday routines, we do not realize how quickly time is passing. It seems like only yesterday when, in the company of our families, our friends, or by ourselves, we greeted the New Year and expressed our wish that it be a happy one. Was it indeed a happy year? How difficult it is to judge. It’s real value can only be seen from afar. The passage of time often erases memories of what, at the moment, appeared to be immeasurable happiness or unending sorrow and pain. There are people who especially remember the wrongs they suffered by the hand of others. They not only do not try to forget but actually cultivate this “flower of evil” growing in their hearts. At the same time, they do not remember any wrongs they might have caused to others. Sometimes all that need be done is to give support to someone in their hour of need, to speak a kind word. Greater strength is needed to forget our anger than to cultivate it. But there may come a time when time and space will separate us and we will no longer be able to take back our harsh words or our angry silence. “We must not let the sun set on our anger.” But it is still more difficult to disregard the evil circulating around us in the world, in the form of inter national relations, wars, murders. These evils motivate people to look for a way out, for some semblance of sanity in the world. More and more attention is now focused on the family as the basic social unit. The family circle is the means by which a person can learn to cope with evil, can learn to love, can learn responsibi lity. Looking back in time, let us look at our families, our relatives, our friends, our countrymen, in Ukraine and in the free world, free and imprisoned. Maybe there is someone who needs us, needs our attention, a kind word, advice, or just an expression of our friendship and love. We are at the doorstep of the New Year, before us is Christmas, the Feast of the Holy family. At this time, let us join together in thought with all those dear to us. Let us ask ourselves what we can do for them, how we can help them, how we can become needed by them. For to be needed is the very essense of human happiness. Translated by M.
