HEALTH & WELLBEING By Dr. Maria Motyl VERDICT ON DIVORCE: KIDS MAY SUFFER D і vorce has become a very significant social phenomenon in the U.S. In the one- year period between June 1979 and June 1980 the rate of divorce was 50% the rate of marriage and there were over one million divorces in this country. Since the average length of marriage before divorce is now 6.6 years, many young children are being brought up in single parent households. Psychiatrists are concerned about the psychological impact that divorce may have on these children. Reactions to divorce are defined by the child’s developmental level. Infants and toddlers may react with increased irritability, greater dependency and regression in toilet training. Young school-aged children may feel that they are responsible for the divorce and suffer from guilt. Older children may be depres sed or show a higher incidence of aggres sive behavior. Additional factors cause problems to arise several years after divorce. Approxi mately three years after the divorce, about half of all divorced fathers never see their children and consequently child-support payments decrease. This places additio nal strains on the mother with the custody of the child. Psychiatrists recognize that not all children will suffer psychological damage from divorce. Several factors, however, increase the psychological risk during the divorce period. These include: the quality of family life before the divorce, the extent of turbulence during the divorce proceed ings and after the divorce, and the emotional stability of the parent remaining at home. CHILD’S WORK HABITS ARE KEY TO SUCCESS What is the most important forerun ner of mental health in adulthood? A newly published study in The American Journal of Psychiatry suggests that the willingness and capacity to work in child hood ranks highest over other factors such as native intelligence, social class or family situation. The study involved the periodic testing and interviewing of 450 white men from working-class families overa 35-year period. It was found that those who had been industrious as youngsters turned out to be the most well-adjusted adults and to have the most successful work lives and the most satisfying personal relation ships. A related conclusion of the report is that the capacity for adult work is closely related to both mental health and the capacity to love. When first tested as teenagers, the boys were scored by researchers ac cording to whether they held a regular part-time job, were responsible for some household chores and took part in school activities, clubs orsports. Points were also given if a boy’s school grades were higher than his IQ score would predict and if he showed by h is activities that he was able to plan and make the best of his environ ment. Those boys who received high points on this boyhood competence scale tended to become successful in their later personal lives and careers, some of them in spite of very weak home environmentas children. Sixty-seven men in the group who had the lowest industry scores as children, on the other hand, were 10 times more likely to be rated as emotionally disabled when interviewed at the age of 45 and had a much higher mortality rate than the high scorers. “What we do affects how we feel, just as much as how we feel affects what we do,” the study concludes. “The sources of job failure do not always rest on ignorance, dropping out of school, the absence of a trade or faulty knowledge of the job market. Being chronically unemployed often has more to do with chronic depression and emotional instability than with prior training and ability.”
