OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America VOL. XXXIX MARCH 1982 EDITED BY A. H. Sawyckyj Viewpoint UNWLA NEEDS THE $100,000 OLENA LOTOTSKY FUND by Ivanna Rozankowsky Olena Lototsky, UNWLA’s President for 22 years, and Our Life’s Editor for five years, was an extraordinary individual who will be remembered by us all. Her dedica tion to the cause of Ukrainian womanhood and the pre servation of Ukrainian culture was matched by a charismatic personality that reached out and embraced every person that came in contact with her. The late President and then Honorary President of UNWLA devoted forty years of her life to our organization. On November 1,1981, on the sixth anniver sary of Olena Lototsky’s death on December 2, 1975, the National Executive of UNWLA established the $100,000 Olena Lototsky Fund of UNWLA. The purpose of the newly established fund is to provide UNWLA with a firm financial base. The National Executive’s decision to establish the new fund is based on UNWLA’s current financial status, which is a source of concern. While UNWLA does not face the prospect of impending bankruptcy there is no question that we need to build up our financial base to insure that the next UNWLA administration does not inherit an empty cash box and financial debts. What reserves UNWLA had built up over the years went to the purchase in 1974 of part of a building to house the Ukrainian Museum, a space the museum still occupies rent-free. That cost to UNWLA was $45,000. Over the last ten years, UNWLA has also had to subsidize the publication of Our Life magazine to the tune of $35,000, as the inflationary costs of publication have exceeded income from subscriptions, the Press Fund and other sources. A secure financial base for UNWLA has been needed since the beginning of our organization, but has never been created. This is probably due to the fact that UNWLA members have been very responsive to the needs of other institutions and fund-raising campaigns in the Ukrainian community, sometimes more so than to the financial need of their own women’s organization. Probably UNWLA members have not been aware, and still may not be, of the financial crises that have plagued our organization for several decades, sometimes endangering its very existence, and at other times, simply making it impossible to carry out some of its planned projects. In May, 1941, for example, the Fifth Convention of UNWLA voted to establish an UNWLA magazine. However, shortly thereafter, it was discovered that there were no funds to finance such a project. In 1965, before the Jubilee Convention, the National Executive could not call a meeting of the National Board due to lack of funds, and had to turn to the Branches to ask for a donation of $10 from each to finance the meeting! In a more recent example, UNWLA — a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs — has not been able to afford to send its representative to this group’s last two national conventions. Also, although a member of the National Council of Women, UNWLA has not been represented at a convention of the International Council of Women since 1977, due to a lack of funds. In this way, many valuable contacts between Ukrainian women and their non-Ukrainian counterparts are lost, and it takes years to reestablish them. In 1948, Olena Lotosky wrote: “UNWLA is strong in its idea and ideal of a family of Branches and members. But it must also have a strong financial base for its work.” She repeated this in various ways at every opportunity. Olena Lototsky had to devote much time and effort to acquire funds for UNWLA to enable it to function. Her frequent visits to the Branches were not geared to activate the membership, but to acquire much-needed funds for the organization. The $100,000 Olena Lototsky Fund is critical to the financial future of the organization to which this extraor dinary woman devoted forty years of her life. As inhe ritors of Olena Lototsky’s tradition, let us preserve UNWLA for the present and future generations of Ukrainian women. OUR LIFE can be many things to many people. As a magazine by and for Ukrainian women, we try to provide a variety of materials to interest all our readers. Is there something you would like to see more (or less) of in Our Life?
