Making your first Public Speech, addition to making your talk more sub stantive. Practice your speech at home before an appreciative family (construc tive criticism only, please). If your family isn’t giving you enough feedback, practice with a friend. Practice your speech out loud as you stir the borshch on the stove. ■ Relax. If you are interested in the subject of your speech, and feel it’s important, let your enthusiasm come through in your manner of presentation. Think positive. Tell yourself that your audience wants to hear your ideas, they’re not just waiting for you to slip up. ■ The Nltty-Grltty. Capture your audience with your opening remarks. Be specific in your speech. Use examples. Bring in human interest stories in order to make your point. Enunciate clearly, don't mumble. Try using some gestures. End your speech with a bang, make your closing remarks memorable. Try to talk to the audience, not read your speech to them. ■ Don’t overdo It. In your eagerness to make your talk a success you may let yourself run on and bore your audience to tears in the process. There is nothing duller than the sight of a speaker turning endless pages of notes. Remember, its the quality of your remarks, not the length of your speech that counts. (That’s a positive aspect of the American culture you should emulate — (short speeches with humor and punch). ■ Give yourself a second chance. If your terror at the thought of public speaking doesn’t subside after the first appearance before a group, give your self a little time. Don’t give up after one speech, good or bad. One speech does not make or break a public speaking career. Try it a second and third time. It’s like learning to drive a car: once you’ve mastered the art, you’ll ask yourself: ’’How could I have thought I couldn’t do it?” ■ Good luck. You can do it. At the very least, you owe it to yourself to try. -A. H. S. ’’НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, СІЧЕНЬ 1982 27
