LIBRARY OF CONGRESS SEEKS ETHNIC PUBLICATIONS The Library of Congress needs assistance in collecting sample copies of publications issued by and for the ethnic groups in the United States. As a national library, the Library of Congress hasa responsi bility for maintaining collections that reflect the history and cul ture of the American people and the many ethnic groups that compose it. Although the Library has both ethnic newspapers and publications in it§ collections, there is a need to expand the coverage. It will not be possible to collect all the publications issued throughout the country, but it is important to have a wide selection of newspapers, periodicals, books and pamphlets, as well as sound recordings and films that reflect the interests, concerns, and activities of America’s ethnic groups. Some of these publications are produced by organizations, such as Slovaks in America: A Bicentennial Study, published by the Slovak League of America. Others are produced by churches, especially for anniversary commemorations, e.g., The Assump tion Church in History 1939-1979, published by the Greek Ortho dox Church of the Assumption in Seattle, Washington. Various literary works and personal reminiscences of members of ethnic groups are often written in languages other than English, though sometimes there are bi-lingual or translated anthologies such as Lithuanian Writers in the West, published by the Lithuanian Library Press in Chicago. Some publications present genealogi cal studies, e.g., Czech Pioneers in Texas: Vincenc Doubrava and Frantiska Novak Doubrava and Their Descendents. Various ethnic meetings and conferences also yield publications such as The Role of Americans of Italian Heritage in the 1980’s which fol lowed an international conference on the topic held in Washing ton in 1979. All similar materials, whether in English or in other languages, are of interest to the Library of Congress. As a first step toward framing its future acquisitions policy, the Library needs information about available ethnic publica tions of every type, ranging from pamphlets to substantial multi volume collections, from newsletters and local periodicals to journals with national distribution. Books, pamphlets, and music that can be made available free of charge should be sent to the address given below. For publications that are for sale, the Library wishes to receive information as to the author, title, name and address of the publisher or distributor, date of publication, number of pages, and price. The same applies to music and spoken-word sound recordings. In the case of newspapers and periodicals, it would be very helpful to receive several sample issues. Earlier publications and complete sets of periodicals no longer being published can also be sent to the Library, but it is recommended that the donating parties first inquire whether the publications are already in the Library’s collections. Not all of the publications reported or sent to the Library will be acquired or retained permanently. Neverthless, public re sponse will enable the Library to determine the full range of ethnic publications available today and to enable us to make the national collections truly representative of all elements of the nation’s culture. All persons who can assist the Library in this important pro ject are urged to do so. Letters and publications should be addressed to the Exchange and Gift Division, Ethnic Unit, Library of Congress, Washington, D. C. 20540.
