UNWLA BRANCH 58 — OLENA TELIHA (1980 projects and activities) January Election of officers: President — Justine Nelligan, Vice- Pres. — Olga Hubchik, Vice-Pres. —Mary Allie, Rec. Sec. — Ann Sedorak, Cor. Sec. —Marcelene Chomiak, Treasurer — Helen Lampi, Historian — Mary Lee Prowalny Malanka Meeting held at home of Justine Nelligan. February Held “Luncheon is Served" with Ukrainian-American Fashion Show with proceeds designated for the Ukrainian Village. Seven members attended the Annual Meeting of the Regional Council. Sonia Hazen elected Vice-President and Organizational Chairman. March Members attended Mary Beck’s 18th leap year birthday party. 23 members attended the Detroit Women’s Federation Luncheon at Fairlane Manor. Regional Council donated a Ukrainian ceramic egg for a door prize. $100 Membership paid to the NY Ukrainian Museum. A monetary gift was sent to new sister Branch 53. April Sonia Hazen, one of a committee of 4, to plan a Ukrainian Festival at the Palm Beach School in Birmingham. The Festival featured a Ukrainian cultural display, films, songs, food, etc. 15 members attended Branch 53’s Dinner and Fashion Show. May We held a Rummage Sale on May 3 at the Ukrainian National Center — proceeds for the Ukrainian Village. Took an ad in Dibrova’s Commemorative Book. Donated $100 to the “Soul of Ukraine.” Sonia Hazen submitted a write-up on Mrs. Irene Kozachenko as “Mother of the Year” to the International Institute and our entry was selected to this honor. Branch 58 helped the Regional Council with Gloria Surmach-Mills’ showing of Glass Painting at Eko Gallery. June Helped with Blessing of Ground affair for the Ukrainian Village. Branch 58 donated a large sum of money July Branch 58 manned the Regional Council Booth on Opening Night — Friday, July 11 at Hart Plaza during the GOP Convention. We donated the nalysnyky batter and fruit fillings. Participated and attended the Regional Council Picnic at Dibrova. Donated $20 toward expenses. Branch 58 volunteered to run the Ukrainian Festival Queen Contest. Selection of the Queen was on July 31 at Eko Gallery with a reception for candidates, family, and friends. Roma Senyk was chosen out of seven entries. Miss Ukraine Ribbon was made for the 1980 queen, as well as for the 1979 and 1981 queens. August Participated in the Detroit Ukrainian Ethnic Festival held in the Hart Plaza in Downtown Detroit on August 15, 16, 17. This was our ninth consecutive year of participation. We had a Food Booth in which we sold Ukrainian. We also shared a large Beverage Booth with the Ukrainian Village. $750 from the Beverage Booth was donated to the Ukrainian Village on our behalf. October 23 members attended sister Chapter 45’s Dinner and Fashion Show. November Sonia Hazen was chairman of Soyuzanka Day. It commemorated the 45th Anniversary of the Regional Council and honored 45-year members of all Chapters. Branch 58 made the flowers presented to the 45-year members and past presidents of the Regional Council. The 45-year members received a white silk rose and wheat tied with a sapphire blue velvet ribbon, and past presidents received pale blue silk daisies and wheat corsages. We had a display table showing our accomplishments for the past 33 years. Members purchased cards with proceeds designated for the NY Ukrainian Museum. Mrs. Catherine Chomiak’s speech made on Soyuzanka Day was translated into English for future reference. December Joanna Kulchesky, Helen Sedorak, Ann Sedorak and Anastasia Sosnowsky decorated the Ukrainian Christmas Tree for the Detroit Historical Museum. We are proud that several members have been serving the community as follows: Sonia Hazen as Vice-President and Organizational Chairman of the Regional Council. Oresta Karaiush — director of “Soul of Ukraine.” Justine Nelligan — on the Detroit Ukrainian Ethnic Festival Executive Board. Olga Dubrovny-Solovey — directed the Prometheus Youth Choir of St. Michael’s Church, who sang at the Ethnic Festival. Joanna Dragenda-Kulchesky — director of School of Ukrainian Dance, “Echoes of Ukraine,” and Ethnic Festival Program Director. Donations: Ukrainian Village Building Fund, Independence Day — UCCA, Soul of Ukraine Radio Program, Federation of Women’s Clubs, Regional Council Picnic, New York Ukrainian Museum cards compiled by Ann Sedorak Rec. Secretary ACTIVITIES OF BRANCH 80 FOR 1980 On February 3rd Branch hosted the Annual Regional Meeting by serving the dinner. In May Branch participated in a “Ukrainian Week” at the Bloomfield Hills grade school where a “Ukrainian” meal was served and Ukrainian artifacts were displayed and sold. In June a Festival was held at Hamlich Park in Warren and Branch participated by baking cookies for sale and selling artifacts. In July Detroit hosted the Republican National Convention and all the Branches participated by serving Ukrainian foods. The annual “Ukrainian Festival” was held at the Hart Plaza on August 15,16 and 17 and our members supported this Festival. October 2 thru 5th the International Institute held their Annual “Old World Market” and our members took part. November 16, 1980 Regional Council celebrated the 45th Anniversary of the Detroit Region at the annual “Day of Soyouzanka” at the Ukrainian Community Center. Members attended this affair. On December 10th the members held their Annual Christmas party at one of the members home, Mary Pinkos, where a potluck dinner was served and Christmas Carols were sung.
