LEARNING EMBROIDERY "Zernovey vyveed” is the Ukrainian name for square stitch. It is used in va rious parts of Ukraine, in central and in southwestern regions alike. Usually this stitch divides the various embroidered fields of a design, and enhances the areas around the motifs of shoulder-in- sertion designs used on shirts. In the motif shown in April’s issue and repeated here (Fig. 5), the square stitch is an integral part of the motif-design, and appears in both its variations: "diagonal square stitch”, also known as "single faggot stitch”, and when done on the straight line of the fabric, called "four- sided” or "square stitch”. "Z ernovey vyveed” is most frequently embroidered on the diagonal. Each single stitch which creates the squares of "square stitch” lies parallel to the threads of the fabric, yet each square joins the previous only at the corner, diagonally. The individual stitchs appear to create a diagonal line of squares, as can be seen on the side "branches” of the motif (Fig. 5). HOW TO EMBOROIDER For this work we recommend first stretching your fabric on an embroidery hoop, in order to assure even stitching. First stitch: Secure the end of the embroidery thread so it will not pull out, and bring the needle with its thread to the front face of your fabric. Count three fabric threads up from the initiating point (where the needle first came out), and insert the needle in the space above that third thread. Carefully count three threads to the left of the initiating point, and there bring the needle out to the front. Pulling the embroidery thread snugly creates the first vertical stitch. Second stitch: Going to the right, insert the needle into the initiating point and, counting three fabric-threads down and to the left from that point, bring the needle out and pull the embroidery thread firmly into place. This second stitch lies horizontally and "touches” the first (vertical) stitch. Third stitch: Similar to the first: the needle is inserted three fabric-threads up from the point where it just came out, and is brought out three threads to the left and down from its current insertion point. Pulling the embroidery thread firmly into place after each stitch, and repeating "second” and ’’third” stitches as many times as needed, you will have embroidered a diagonal line which resembles "stairs”. ( On the reverse face of your fabric, meanwhile, there have been created twin parallel diagonal stitches.) In order to complete diagonal square stitch "Zernovey vyveed” and make the ’’stairs” into squares, we must turn our work. This we accomplish as we work the needle for a horizontal ("second”) stitch: Having pulled the needle out after the last vertical ("third”) stitch, insert the needle three fabric-threads to the right and pull the needle out three fabric- threads to the left and up from its inser tion point. (Working this stitch properly creates a cross-stitch on the reverse side of the fabric.) Now turn your work upside down, so that last stitch lies not at the bottom, but at the top of the "stairs”. And again, insert the needle three fabric-threads up (to join the previous stitch), and bring it out down and to the left past three threads, as was described for "third” stitch (above), and again repeating "second” and "third" stitches, the "squares” of ’’diagonal square stitch” are formed. Finish by closing up the last square and drawing the embroidery needle and thread out on the reverse side of the fabric, and secure the thread’s end in such a way that it will not pull out in laundering, or, if there is still enough length of embroidery thread, embroider the other parts of the design ( in this motif, the "leaf”). ’’Four-sided (square) stitch” is worked thus: the "first” stitch — as described above. Follow directions for ’’second” stitch as above but bring the needle out upward, not downwards. For the third stitch, the needle is inserted to the right (where the top of the first stitch lies), and withdrawn going down and left by three threads. Then repeat from ’’first” stitch, thus creating squares which touch side to side in a straight row going from right to left. (On the reverse of the fabric are created touching cross-stitches, each having one double stitch.) We recommend learning to do these stitches of "zernovey vyveed” on a practice piece of fabric first, as it takes a little practical experience to know where to start the first stitch with relation to a complete design.
