a color scheme is present in only one other region — Chernihivshchyna. The embroidery technique used most often by far is the cross stitch. The design is supplemented by stebnivka; the separate parts are connected by mereshka. Let us touch on one other aspect of the ornamentation of Sokalshchyna — its composition. The main feature of the embroidered blouse is its sleeve design. Originally, the sleeve design consisted of two rows of embroidery, joined by a connecting design. A further development led to motifs being scattered over the entire sleeve. This is very similar to the "odkydky" on blouses of Podniprovia. As the sleeve becomes more and more ornate, it becomes even more beautiful: sometimes an additional square of cloth, reaching to the elbow, is done in odkydky. There is also a vertical variant, in which a single narrow design is done on the sleeve. From this single design, strips of embroidery run down the length of the sleeve, to the cuff. This brief description of the embroidered blouses of Sokalshchyna enables us to know and understand its richness and beauty. We are delighted to be able to present the Ukrainian woman with such a collection of embroidery designs, now in its first edition. We took our sample designs from the collection of Iryna Kashubynska, redrawn by Olha Trachuk. We thank both ladies for their help. OUR COVER METROPOLITAN ANDREY SHEPTYCKYJ November 1st is the joyous anniversary of Lviv’s inde pendence day in 1918; November 1st is also the anniver sary of the death of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptyckyj in 1944. Those who lived in Lviv, also clearly recall the perso nage of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptyckyj. His palace, located nextto St. George’s Cathedral, although enclosed by iron gates and stone walls, was always open for the needy, the children, and refugees. Though extremely thrifty where he was concerned, he was the founder and benefactor of numerous institu tions in Lviv and beyond. One need only mention the National Museum and the “Narodna Lichnycia” (clinic) in Lviv. The “plastuny”, also, owe to him their camps, including the memorable camp at Sokil, near Pidluttia. No one who has seen him will ever forget those blue eyes, so full of love towards his people. Fortunately, we have one recording of his voice; Eng. Oleksander Pezanskyj was able to catch part of an Easter sermon at the Voloska Church in Lviv, in 1939. On hearing the ringing of the church bells, followed by the speaker’s words, “And you my brothers... ”, all present instinctively rose, as even during the “Lord’s Prayer”. As “his brothers” he included all Ukrainians, regard less of beliefs. Maybe, if hewere still alive today, we would not be having such a problem in the unification of Ukrainians in time for the 1000-year anniversary of the “Christening of the Ukraine”. Maybe, just the thought of him will suffice, and we will be able to unite, if only forthis great occasion. But even our greatest leaders need the cooperation and good will of the entire community in order to successfully complete this great task. Translated by M. Від своєї ранньої молодості вже як учениця гімназії в Проскурові виступає залюбки на сцені. Навіть свого чоловіка Миколу Бенцаля побачила вона вперше зі сцени. Це був 1919 рік, до Проскурова приїхав театр і саме під час генеральної проби ’’Наймички” побачила Миколу Бенцаля коли той увійшов на залю. Спільна праця в театрі злучила їх. Театр це перше життєве замилування пані Лени. Але вже будучи в театрі народжуються два інші зацікавлення.
