Money can be given only to close, elderly friends. The following items form nice presents and d o n ’t em barrass the receiver: books, records, m usic boxes, m agazine and newspaper subscriptions, exotic nuts and c h eeses, flowers, and g a m es (for children). A present should be appreciated by both sides. It should sh ow attention and interest from the side of the giver; therefore, it is essential to select gifts with the interests of the receiver in mind. OUR COVER Our cover sh o w s a reproduction of a painting by Zoya Lisowska. Wira Wowk surprised us all by printing several reproductions of Zoya Lisowska’s art work in her poetry collection “M eandres” Zoya Lisowska lives in distant Geneva, therefore, th e se prints are as if an art exhibit in miniature. Zoya Lisowska is an artist w ho constantly n eed s and d e sir e s n ew se n s a tio n s , n ew im p r essio n s. S h e s e e k s inspiration for her work in every day life: travel (Rome, Paris, Rio d e Janeiro, Ireland), recollections of Ukraine, and religious them es. She takes in the world intuitively and presents it in the s a m e f a s h io n . S h e p a in ts e n e r g e t ic a lly , with grea t temperament and expression, with a sure hand. The main intention of an artist is to capture the moment; that is why sh e d o e s not stop to fill in details. Essential is the character of the painting. That is why sh e uses, alm ost exclusively, gouache. One can speak of Zoya Lisowska as the humanist of painting. In her paintings, sh e represents a full spectrum of feelin g s. In p aintings with Hutzul th e m e s , again are rep resen ted various hum an istic e x p r e s sio n s. E specially interesting are Zoya Lisowska’s “Self-Portrait,” oil, 1957 and the portrait of Wira Wowk, oil, 1956. Zoya Lisowska used color in order to em phasize the importance of the psychological m oment. Form, com position, and color all work together with the artist in creating on e harmonious whole. PROFESSION: O We are living in an a g e of questionaires, statistics, and lists. No matter where o n e lives, no matter what one d oes, one always se e m s to be filling som ething out, answering so m e questions. Staying at a hotel, getting credit in a store, looking for a job, joining an organization — all involve filling out a questionaire. And almost every o n e of these questionaires p o se this question: “profession?”. If a wom an has a profession, there is no problem. But what if a wom an is “only” a wife and mother? When the questionaire is in English, o n e can simple put “housew ife” or “hom em aker”. But what if the questionaire is in Ukrainian? There is not simple word for the oldest profession in the world in the Ukrainian language. So the Ukrainian wom an simply fill in the question with a dash or a zero. In our Ukrainian questionaires, these zeros appear approximately 50-60% of the time. Therefore, there is a big zero for all those w ho play an essential role in our society — the cultivation of Ukrainian identity in the home. Today, American w om en have gained respect for their work as housewives; w e d o n ’t even have a word for “housew ife.” Today, Americans have a monetary value set for household work, used in divorce ca s e s. But how can o n e m easure the effect a w om an has on the atm osphere of the home, on future generations, on the value of life? A monetary price cannot be set. How ironic that the very w om en on whom so much depends, in statistics and in professional life, list their noble profession as a big zero.
