impossible to have the job I have now which was traditionally held by men, but b ecau se of the affirmative action and upward mobility and the E.E.O. Equal Employment Opportunity in the Bell System these restrictions have been lifted and given w om en an equal opportunity for job placement. Question D. What guidelines can you offer professional wom en who seek executive positions? Answer J. I would like to express the importance that w om en should be qualified for the jobs that they are seeking. Everyday our lives are touched by politics and government. It is essential for w om en to be active in com munity and civic affairs, as well as being active in the political party of choice. Many w om en are running for political office and getting elected. Question D. If a w om an finds that sh e is being discriminated against whether it is a qualified job position or equal salary, what can sh e do? Answer J. Contact the C om mission for Women. My function is on e of com munication. We have proper a g en cies in government that will help and advise anyone to get the answers they need. Since the beginning of the New Year the Com m ission has sent a report to C ongress to support a bill granting an 18% per mile tax deduction for charitable use of cars; this would be addvantageous to organizations as ours. Mrs. Jacob s assured that com munication lines with the Com m ission and our organization will be open through possible Legislative m eetings in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. We will also be receiving a bi-weekly colum n "The W om ens Report” updating all pertainent information edited by the Com mission. Lesia Stachniw Diaczenko Branch 98 this case, both sides were pleased with the ch o ice of presents. The situation d o e s not always fall into place this way, however. It is veryembarrasing when s o m e o n e receives a present which w as too expensive. Young people, especially, should heed this; they should give such presents as they can afford with their m eager earnings. If a present is too expensive, the receiver will feel badly since he will probably not be able to retaliate and b ecau se he knows how much this exp en sive present set back his friend. While buying presentes, o n e should keep to these basic guidelines: — children for children — from $1.00 to $3.00: — unem ployed youth — from $3.00 to $6.00: — adults for adults — from $5.00 to $15.00. Closer friens can surpass these amounts. What NOT to buy: — for children: too many toys (better to get books); — for youth and students: clothes, money, jewelry, personal items: — for adults: household items (unless you know each other very well). alcohol, when visiting active Plastuny. Often w e m eet s o m e o n e in search of a present for a c lo s e or not so clo se a friend. Once, in conversation, my niece brought up this very topic. — Aunt Luba, my husband and I are visiting Roman andT aisa and I don't know what to get Roman for his birthday. I haven’t seen them fora while and I haven’t the faintest id e a a sto th e ir lik e s a n d dislikes. From this I ded u ced that the two co u p les were friends but not too close. Therefore it would do to get som ething general, not too personal. — Roman likes gardening in the spring. He enjoys reading adventure novels and I also know he likes exotic c h eeses. — So an elegant basket of c h e e s e s , approximately $8, would be nice. — But the c h e e s e s I c h o o s e might be either too ordinary or tooo exotic for him. — Then let’s turn to books. Frederick Forsyth’s book, "Devil’s A dvocate” is very popular. Or how about Danko Viter’s ’’Daleki Mandry.” My niece bought Danko Viter’s novel and flowers for the couple; as a birthday present, Roman received Forsyth’s novel. In for equal rights for all wom en. Question D. Would you enumerate your fundamental duties as chairperson of this Com m ission? Answer J. The C om m ission was established in 1975 to be an advocate for the rights of all w om en in all areas of the com m onw ealth and in all types of situations. The C om mission is responsible for carrying out state policies of the ERA (Equal Rights Amendment) and with increasing the efforts of state government to eradicate sex discrimination in Pennsylvania. My contribution is to be an advocate to all w om en of the com m onw ealth and not only to o n e particular segm ent. Women have an option to do what they want to do. It took me a long time to achieve the goals that I have achieved. I would like to feel that I am making it easier for w om en to accom plish goals in much less time.
