CHAPTER 58 - OLENA TELIHA - UNWLA ACTIVITIES — September 1978 through December 1979 October 1978 — Participated in Regional Council’s Souzanka Day at which new flags were blessed by being ”KUMA”. We also made and donated the table decorations as well as baked goods. We also took this occasion to present a check in the amount of $10,000.00 to the Regional Council Project, Ukrainian Village Building Fund. Olga Hubchik was photographer for the event. January 1979 — Election of officers: President — Justine Nelligan Vice President — Olga Hubchik Vice President — Mary Allie Rec. Sec. — Ann Sedorak Cor. Sec. — Marcelene Chomiak Treasurer — Helen Lampi Historian — Mary Lee Prowalny Regional Council Meeting (Annual) — Sonia Hazen elected Vice President Held luncheon and Ukrainian Fashion Show with proceeds designated for Ukr. Village Bldg. Fund. Models wore todays’s fashions which had been embroidered with authentic Ukra inian cross stitch designs March 1979 — Participated in the Federation of Women’s Clubs Annual Scholarship Luncheon and Fashion Show at the Detroit Yacht Club. Attended concert by Shymka Dancers from Alberta, Canada, as a group. April 1979 — Attended banquet in honor of Nadia Svitlychna and donated baked goods. May 1979 — Sponsored ”Barn-jo-ree”, a ”hard-times party" with a "Share-the-Wealth Raffle" with all proceeds for Ukr. Village Bldg. Fund. Olga Dubriwny — Solovey lead the group singing at Branch 23 Mother and Daughter Banquet. Attended Branch 63 25th Anniversary Banquet. June 1979 — Ukrainian Village Kick-off Banquet. Sent telegram to President Jimmy Carter Valentyn Moroz’s release. July 12 — Annual Card Party Luncheon at the home of Jean Fitzsimmons. Table prizes were hand-made silk poppies and daisies with wheat in vases. Raffle prize was a figure of a Kobzar. All proceeds were to the Ukr. Village Bldg. Fund. July 22 — Attended Regional Council Picnic at Dibrova. July 27, 28 and 29 — Participated in the Detroit Ukrainian Ethnic Festival held in the Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit for our 8th consecutive year. Sold in our booths were nalysnyky, schnitzly, holubchi, kapusta, kobasa and tortes. We also had a raffle of Ukrainian Kobzar figure. November 4 — Participated in Soyuzanka Day. 12 members were present. We made table decorations, decorated and set the tables, helped collect tickets, poured coffee, set-up the pastry table. Also cleared up the tables. We had a table at the boutique at which we sold hand made Hutzul Bears. Our member, Sonia Hazen, Vice President of the Detroit Regional Council was chairman of the affair. December — Members took the Christmas Walk and Dinner afterward at Greenfield Village. We are proud that several of our members have been serving the community as follows: Sonia Hazen as Vice President of the Detroit Regional Council. Oresta Karlash, public Relations as director of Soul of Ukraine Radio Program. Justine Nelligan on the Detroit Ukr. Ethnic Festival Executive Board. Olga Dubriwny-Solovey directed the Promethus Youth Choir of St. Michael’s Church who sang at the Ethnic Festival. Joanna Draginda-Kulchesky, director of School of Ukrainian Dance and Echoes of Ukraine, and Ethnic Festival Program Director. Jen Materyb’s recipe for "Lazy Day Perohi" was one of 300 recipes printed in Kelly’s Cook Book for Busy People. Compiled by Ann Sedorak Rec. Secretary. ACTIVITIES OF BRANCH 80 (or 1979 Branch consists of 32 members and on Feb. 7, 30 members gathered at Joann’s Restaurant for the Installation of new officers for the new year. Mrs. Lydia Kolodchin 1st Vice- President of Regional Council was a guest and installed the new officers. On April 8, some of the members participated in a dinner for Mrs. Nadia Svitlychna that the Regional Council sponsored in her honor. In June 9th, the Ukrainian Village held a fund raiser banquet at the Ukrainian Community Center which all the members attended as this is the project of the Detroit Regional Council to build a home for the Senior Citizens. In August as every year Detroit holds a Ukrainian Festival for 3 days. The Ukrainian Village, Inc. rented a booth to sell artifacts which members donate to raise money. Members of the Branch helped by participating. On Sept. 20, branch held a "Dinner and Fashion Show" at the Ukrainian Community Center with the proceeds designated for the Ukrainian Village, which was a success with the cooperation of all the members. On Oct. 21, Mrs. Raisa Moroz was a guest of the Immaculate Conception High School and members of all the branches had an opportunity to meet with her to exchange feelings and ideas. Tea and dessert was served during the evening. On Nov. 4, this year as well as the last few years, Regional Council holds a "Day of Soyuzanka” where new Branches are welcomed. This year 3 new members were welcomed in our branch. On Dec. 8 & 9, St. Josephat’s Church held a Bazaar and invited other organizations to participate. Branch members baked Christmas cookies for this purpose and sold other items suitable for this occasion.
