Are th e ou tw a rd e x p r e s s io n s o f th is fe e lin g — via d e m o n s tr a tio n s , s p e e c h e s an d s o n g s — e n o u g h ? S h o u ld n ’t th e r e b e tied to th is fe e lin g a s e n s e of r e s p o n s ib ility for o n e 's a c tio n s , for c o n d u c tin g o n e ’s life a c c o r d in g to th e n e e d s o f a larg er unit — o n e ’s c o u n tr y ? Of c o u r s e , n o t e v e r y o n e c a n b e a h e ro or h e r o in e . That is, n o t e v e r y o n e s h o u ld or c a n c r o s s th e lim its of norm al h u m a n r e s is t a n c e an d to le r a n c e o f pain or p r e ss u r e . But th e m o n e y an d k n o w le d g e o f h e r o ic d e e d s of o th e r s o b li g e s e a c h in d ivid u al to a ce rta in a m o u n t of effort, n ot ju st to lo u d w o r d s o f p r a ise and r e sp e c t. An e s s e n t ia l part o f lo v e — if it is n o t ju st a s h o r t lived e m o t io n — is a s e n s e o f r e sp o n s ib ility . T h is re la te s n ot o n ly to lo v e of c o u n tr y , but to lo v e o f p a r e n ts a n d c h ild r en and lo v e for a b e lo v e d in d ivid u al. Of c o u r s e th e e x p r e s s io n of lo v e, or a c t io n s r e su ltin g from a fe e lin g of r e sp o n s ib ility for th e lo v e d o n e , a re d e te r m in e d by c ir c u m s ta n c e s . Our ta sk s h o u ld b e to s u p p o r t e v e r y e x p r e s s io n of th e fig h t for fr ee d o m ; to h e lp t h o s e w h o in th e n a m e of fr e e d o m put th eir life ’s a c h ie v e m e n t s and th eir o w n an d th eir f a m ilie s ’ s a f e ty o n th e line.
