BRANCH 38 OF UNWLA We do not blame thee elder World, nor really separate ourselves from thee. (Would the son separate himself from the father?) Looking back on thee, seeing thee to thy duties, grandeurs, through past ages bending, building, We build to ours today. ... .. ...... 1 Walt Whitman It is with this spirit of thought that I would like to share an unforgettable experience with the readers of Nashe Z hyttia. I am proud of the achievements realized by Branch 38 of UNWLA in its first year of existence. On October 28, 1979, a day of "Soyuzanke” was celebrated in Denver, Colorado. It was an elegant and inspiring event- the memory of which will be cherished for a long time by those who attended. In planning this eminent day, those in charge paid homage to our God-given priceless dower- Ukrainian art. Throughout the exhibit, the aesthetic accents everywhere were indubitably Ukrainian. A dear Ukrainian spirit and a Ukrainian intellect permeated the atmosphere. A team of exhibit designers (members of the chapter) assembled numerous objects in an educational and interesting manner under the guidance of their president, Mrs. Daria Yaworiwska. In the bazaar, many Ukrainian objects d’art were offered: table place mats, napkins rings, greeting cards, music records, jewelry. In the archives segment, there was an entire wall- table devoted exclusively to the visual disciplines realized by "Soyuzanke” this past year. There was a pictorial display of the socio-educational visit to Denver by Madam Iwana Rozankowsky, Executive President of UNWLA. There was an array of correspondence received from notables (mayors, congressmen, governors) in response to the efforts of some members of Branch 38 to acquaint these dignitaries with the plight of the Ukrainian children living in Ukraine today. This poignant enterprise was especially significant because 1979 has been designated as the “International Year of the Child.” There was a dazzling display of a collection of un believably beautiful dolls dressed in authentic Ukrainian garments. This group of dolls was impressive because of its colorful impact and (more importantly) because it represented a most thoroughly detailed study of the costumes of the past in Ukraine. For a student of history, an accumulation of this magnitude was truly a treasure. The private collection was created by and be longs to Mrs. D. Yaworiwsky. The buffet was excellent (naturally- the food was traditionally Ukrainian!) and the charming ladies who served were dressed in attractive outfits using modified degrees of embroidery of Ukrainian design origin. The hostesses endeared themselves to everyone because of their sincere hospitality, so familiar to anyone of Ukrainian descent. Overseeing the entire splended display of Ukrainian memorabilia was a portrait of Miss Olena Stepaniw, be loved patron of Branch 38. I congratulate Mrs. Yaworiwska, president of Branch 38, for her vision, enthusiasm and competence in arranging the day of "Soyuzanke” I congratulate the fine committee (all members) who so willingly and ably worked to make this magnificent idea a reality. As I was leaving, I gave an appreciative nod to the concept of a day for “Soyuzanke”; I felt as if I were in complete harmony and accord with the illustrious tradition of our great Ukrainian forefathers. “Soyuzanke Day” was a distinguished day which can best be interpreted and remembered as a moment which aroused a feeling of pride in one’s heritage, a reminder of the great glory which was and is UKRAINE. Publishers of books or newspapers often have "dead files” of photos or negatives which they would often be glad to donate to a worthy project. Many collections contain duplicate photos, and these are relatively easy to acquire. The advantage of obtaining photos from a private collector are that the individual can often provide in formation about the subject or time period of a photo, and can recommend other photo collectors to see. But great care should be taken in identifying the photographs. One cannot rely solely on people’s memory, but must independently verify the date and the identity of persons in a photograph. The historical value of the photograph depends on accuracy! Other items that should not be overlooked in creat ing a photo documentation project are postcards of various institutions in the community, as well as Ukrainian newspaper and almanac photos. A good historical photo documentation project can be a valuable educational tool for our community educa tional institutions, not to mention its obvious place as part of a museum exhibit. An important step in the campaign is to notify our entire community about the goal and significance of the project. Success depends to a large extent on good publicity! In announcing the campaign to create a Photo Documentation Center of the type described above, we must show great enthusiasm and faith in the value of the effort. If we are able to generate the same enthusiasm in others as we have among ourselves, we will be on the way to success. Let us get to work on this new activity of the Museum and Arts Chairwoman. Each UNWLA Region should receive from the UNWLA Executive Board a well- prepared action program for carrying out this photo collection project. If we have the information on how to work and whom to contact for photos, I am sure that this new UNWLA action will be another success in the de velopment and work of our Museum. Translared by A.H.S.
