“SHE WHO IS GREATER THAN THE EARTH” Oksana Lukaszewycz - Polon She w ho is ever yo u th fu l and gay Recalling never the m ultitu de s she bore Scattered now in the la byrin th of time. Is she b u t a dream o f yesteryears? For in gentleness she rests C row ned w ith the laurel of a life selflessly spent Lovely and elegant as were blossoms of lilies she once held. Into the darkness she has descended Entom bed in to Earth's em brace Rem aining q u ie tly in sleep unsurpassable She w h o is greater than the Earth A realization o f peace A sheltering haven Remembered in the frozen evening o f W inter's chill. A visienary dream fo r me today Precious as the lig h t tha t her image com pels A hope fo r w hat is yet to be A lig h t in the darkness A glow having on ly once passed this way. Silence when quie tu de is all that you hung er for. S tru g g lin g against darkness C rushing pain as chaos overtakes D ispelling grief, she is relief. The sum m er breeze th a t passes once on ly And is dispersed. Tempests in the soul reco iling No shrine no r fire has b ro u g h t her thus Elegant as quiet m arble beneath the soft rays o f dawn. Germany’s largest mass-circulation magazines. A popular weekly, Stern is similar in style to Life magazine, but more newsy and political. Emma’s Intent: to stop Stern from publishing nude women on its covers. What was called the first sexism trial in West Germany was argued for two months in a Hamburg Court. The 10 women plaintiffs, among them publisher Alice Schwarzer, argued that although Stern's models were paid handsomely, they were portrayed as "objects of lust" And Stern’s depicting females in this manner was insulting and damaging to all women. “We knew from the beginning there was no chance we would win,” explained Annelle Runge, one of Emma’s editors, in an interview. “But we decided to take the case to court so it would be discussed by the public. What Stern is doing — after all, it’s a serious magazine on the inside — is advocating a double standard and we want people to realize that." It was difficult to say whether Stern had taken Emma seriously. Editor-in-Chief Henri Nannen chided Alice Schwarzer for being a “humorless, gray-skirted feminist” in his column and on the cover a bare- bottomed baby appeared with the caption "I’ll have to pull up my pants soon so I won’t get sued again.” Despite their devil-may-care public stance in print, Stern hired a battery of lawyers to argue the case in court. In his decision, Judge Manfred Engelschall stated: “It can be a justified intent to aim at a suitable illustration of women in society, in public and in the media in particular.” But he concluded that it is an issue for the legislature. As an aside, he said that the Emma case was 20 years ahead of its time and that he was almost “sorry” that the case turned out the way it did. The staffers at Emma were triumphant. "It’s not often that judges make extra comments after deciding a case,” said Runge. Moreover, various West German newspapers — after initially dismissing the women from Emma as “Puritan crazies” — shifted their position to support the women’s lawsuit. Finaly, about 1,000 wo men, in a gesture of support, donated some 220,000 deutsche marks ($110,000) to help cover court costs.
