Even young children, barely adolescents, whose lives hang in the balance between the poverty of their families and the generosity of a sponsor from abroad, are aware and grateful for the care and interest shown them. A typical letter to Dr. Sawycka reads: ’’Dear Mrs. Theodozla, I pray each day that God may give you health, because here In Brazil there are still many more poor children who need your help.” Or, should a sponsor respond with laughter or with tears to a letter such as this from his well-intentioned scholarship student: ’’Dear Mr. Paul and Mrs. Marla, There is no way I can repay you for your kindness, but 3 pray that God might reward you with eternal happiness in the next world.” The end of the first decade of the UNWLA’s Scholarship Program is an appropriate time to review HOUSTON IN RETROSPECT With the first National Women’s Conference behind us, we enter a new phase of activity. Although the Houston Conference was procedurally so maneuvered that there was no possibility of presenting any amendments or re solutions without the approval of the chair, we should not give up our efforts in presenting our views to the American people. We should bear in mind that because of our inadequate political clout the only successful way for us will be to win friends and influence people by persuasion and logical arguments rather than dis turbances or organizations actions towards the majority. We cannot force our views upon an audience which is unprepared and/or unwilling to listen and accept them. After meeting with representatives and leaders of major national women’s ornisations, we realized that they are more than willing to accept and not only accept but also support our point of view, if the point of view is presented in a manner acceptable to the "middle America” psyche. At the Houston Conference a consensus of the leadership of the delegates and the special interest groups was not to present any individual special interest case but combine all of them in a general resolution and in the case of human rights it was specifically decided that no national group be singularly mentioned but that a resolution be formulated which would universally satisfy all the delegates. Would it have been to our advantage in developing a FIFTEENTH ANNIVERSARY BRANCH 72 Branch 72 of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America has reached a milestone since its initial organization by Mrs. Mary Lesawyer and Mrs. Mary Dushnyck. This year Branch 72 will be celebrating its Fifteenth Anniversary which will be marked by a gala Dinner — Dance to be held at Soyuzivka on the weekend of October 15th and 16th 1977. The first meeting was held in. the home of Mary Lesawyer. Present at this meeting were Mary Dushnyck, the achievements of these last 10 years and to thank all those who have contributed to the growth of this program by their financial and moral support. They have helped needy Ukrainian youths obtain an education that will affect the course of their lives and the life of their Ukrainian communities. It is also an oppropriate time to remind everyone that (to paraphrase a child’s words) "ther are still many poor Ukrainian children in the world who need your heldp.” A.H.S. ‘S ince this article went to press, we have learned that the la test total figure for the UNWLA scholarship funds raised from 1976 through D ecem ber 31, 1977 is $114,823.00 positive public opinion of the Ukrainian-American wo men if we had disrupted the conference by attempting to push through any amendment or resolution which was contrary to the general consensus? With this in mind UNWLA decided to present a letter to the delegates in which we appealed to the American women for support of the human rights resolution in view of the suffering and indignities inflicted upon the Ukrainian women in the USSR and on women through out the world. In addition to this we attempted to meet with as many delegates and special interest caucuses as possible to lobby for our cause and learned from them that many of them had their own individual special in terest views but they presented them specifically at lo cal meetings ie. community and state, and to their Congressional delegations. They underlined that a national conference such as the one at Houston which included the whole nation in addition to multiple ethnic, racial and religious groups, could not be used as a forum for any specific individual interests. Ukrainian-Americans should realize that the only way that we will be successful in presenting our special national interests to the attention of the American people is by actively participating in the social and poli tical life of America. Therefore it is imperative that the Ukrainian woman take an active part in whatever local, state or national forum is available to her and not expect to be successful at a national conference without a properly laid foundation.
