The American Jewish community, on the other hand, is documenting the holo caust years through 250 in-depth interviews with survi vors of Nazi concentration camps and their descendants. Ukrainians who are convinced of the importance of oral history for our community can and should become part of the oral history movement. The topics for oral history projects will depend on the interest of the inter viewers, and variety should be encouraged. However, I feel that first priority should be given to elderly Ukrainians who have interesting reminiscences about their experiences as pioneer immigrants, or about their life in Ukraine prior to emigration. Daily our newspapers carry more and more obit uaries of the elders of our communities; daily our opportunities to learn about Ukrainian history from those who lived it diminish. These people should be sought out and conversations with them preserved on tape, to be transcribed and placed in a library facility. Persons chosen for oral history interviews (’’oral authors”) may be notable figures such as political leaders, community leaders, community organizers, scientists, artists or others who have contributed to our society. But they may also be ordinary folks who happen to have lived in a period of time which is now (or may someday be) of interest to us and to future generations. Whether notable or not — most oral authors are people who either out of lack of time or out of modesty rarely bother to leave behind records or memoirs, except perhaps anecdotes for their families, the details of which fade away with time. The preservation of the Ukrainian heritage can easily be done by oral history enthusiasts on a local level. Ideally, the oral history interview should be conducted by someone who is familiar with the major events and personalities of a particular place and time, and one who is experienced in guiding conversations along productive lines, separating significant historical information from excessive trivia. 30 НАШ Е ЖИТТЯ, ГРУДЕНЬ 1977 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
