A LO O K A T THE UKRAINE FROM THE STRATOSPHERE P h o t o E R O S D A T A C E N T E R Today there are two American satellites circling the earth with the mission of tracking the earth’s resources. Since 1972, when the first began its work, these Landsat satellites have been photographing the earth’s surface. Their pictures have found widespread application, throughout the world, in such varied fields as agronomy, geology, oceanography, and archaeology. This photograph was taken on September 20,1975. It shows a 185 by 185 km. segment of the earth’s surface. The Dnister is easily visible, flowing through the middle in the picture. In the southwest corner are the Carpathian mountains, intersected by the rivers Prut and Cheremosh. Larger cities show up on the photograph as irregular gray spots. Chernivsty, Kolomya, and a part of Ivano-Frankivsk are fairly clear (Ternopil is outside the scope of the photograph). The symm etrical dark gray forms are freshly plowed fields, and the a- symm etrical forms are forests. НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ, ТРАВЕНЬ 1977 9
