The study showed that a male public relations executive, 43 years of age with 12 years of work experience, received a standard salary of $21,000 annually. A woman with the same credentials serving in the same capacity earned a salary of $16,000 per year. You’ve come a long way, baby, in deed! •Less than ten years ago a young woman who applied for a job as a flight attendant had to agree to stop working if she married, had children or reached the very advanced age of 32. As a result, being a stewardess could hardly be considered a serious career opportunity. Popular opinion had it that the stewardess, like Sleeping Beauty, was just marking time until her prince appeared on the scene. Average seniority in the profession was a mere 18 months. Now that the restrictive, illegal rules have been abolished—under pressure from the stewardesses and the courts—the average seniority is eight years and still rising. The myth of the ’’swinging stewardess,” promoted by both books and films, is suffering a well-deserved, albeit slow, death. Pay, time off and fringe benefits—not glamor—are the reasons most flight attendants are staying in the business today. Moreover, stewardesses are insisting upon a far more serious and respectful attitude toward their work. Spokes women for the profession point out that the flight attendants make or break an airline. Because they deal with passengers throughout the flight, stewardesses are identified most strongly as representatives of the company. Travelers who are not satisfied with in-flight service are likely to book their next trip with a competing airline. Airline companies have, of course, exploited this fact rather sensationally in their advertising. Promotional campaigns with themes such as National’s ”Fly Me...” and Continental’s ”We really move out tails for you,” affronted many of the women working for the companies. The ads intentionally played up the image of sexy maid servant in order to attract the mostly male business traveler. In so doing, they also disparaged the real significance of the flight attendant’s role and promoted a public view of stewardesses which they themselves had worked quite hard to overcome. March is here. It seems as if we were just celebrating Christ mas, and here already is Lent. This year we of the Old Calen dar, and we of the New Calendar will be celebrating Easter to gether. It seems that there are many aspects of our way of life which tend to draw our people apart,one of which is the calendar. There are nations comprised of people whose different view points, religious affiliations, politics, mores, etc., are poles apart, yet the uniting factor which makes them a nation is stronger than the hundred and one differences which draw them apart. This uniting factor binds them into a mighty force acting for the common good. We talk and write a lot about unity; We even pray to the Al mighty to "unite us”. Unity in our understanding is when every one drops his convictions to embrace ours. Unfortunately that is not unity, but a lack of tolerance, which is our national ailment. Instead of underlining each uniting aspect of our rela tionships, we tend to emphasize and underline the differences very strongly. Somehow we cannot accept other points of view, we get emotional and finally tend to hate those who do not think as we do. What foolishness and where will it get us. Such attitude also shows up our lack of good manners, and it is evident at our social gatherings, events, etc. The first step toward correcting these drawbacks is to realize that every person must be treated with respect wheather or not his opinions are like ours or different. The second step is to differentiate between issues of less importance and the major ones and keep each in its proper perspective. We should minimize that which draws us as a nation apart and emphasize that which binds us close together. (Excerpts from Editorial — Ulana Lubovych) The truth of the matter is that stewardesses are not employed by the airlines primarily to make passengers comfortable and happy. They are stationed on the flights for the purpose of maintaining passenger safety. Trained to handle crises should they occur, their skills include first aid, rescue techniques and crowd control. Stewardesses—and there are now male stewards among their ranks—are speaking up for themselves more and more. They forced the discontinuation of the offensive advertisements and encouraged the media to focus its attention on the more relevant issues of flight safety. Today, the flight attendant has the same, standard retirement age as do all employees of the airline. Married women with children have found that their work hours are far more adaptable to family schedules than are office hours of women working in other fields. As a result, in the words of Lil Dediot, a Pan Am flight attendants "We’re having no employee turnover, at least at Pan Am.
