CALENDAR OF ACTIVITIES OF BR. 60 FOR BI-CENTENNIAL YEAR 1976 January — "Swiat Vechir” the annual traditional dinner of 12 fast dish e s symbolizing the 12 ap ostles, was pre p a r e d by t h e m e m b e r s . Ir e n e Kosybynska, Regional Council guest, greeted members with kolach and kutya. February — UNWLA M useum Brickettes purchased by members for the sum of $345.00. March — Jennie Bochar was sworn in by Cleveland Mayor Ralph Perk, as Director of Senior Ethnic Fund. April — Pres. Dorothy Everett and V. Pres. Mary Fedak arranged a com plete Ukrainian Easter display at the Parma City Hall. Jennie Bochar exhibited a Ukrainian Easter display at the Cleve land Main Library. May — Mary Fedak with the help of Jennie Bochar, Eleanor Sovchik, and Dorothy Everett researched and pre pared four c a se s of first Ukrainian immigration to Cleveland. Documents and articles were displayed at the Cleveland Main Library in connection with the Nationality Bi-Centennial program. A bus tour arranged by Jennie Bochar to the Niagara Falls Art Gallery Museum and St. Catherine’s S. S. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Church was enjoyed by branch members. June — Participated in "Under One Flag” festival at the May Company. July — Jennie Bochar was chair man of the gala opening cerem ony of the Greater Cleveland Ethnographic Museum Exhibit at the Western Reserve Historical Society. Jennie Bochar and Mary Fedak were the Ukrainian re presentatives from the start of this pro ject. Sept. — Pres. Dorothy Everett presented a program on her recent visit to Ukraine. Mary Fedak and Dorothy Everett participated in the 75th Jubilee of Ukrainian immigration to Cleveland. Dorothy Everett received a scroll, and acknow ledgem ent in honor of her father’s distinction as one of the first three Ukrainians in Cleveland. October — W orkshops for members for the Christmas Bazaar. November — W o rk sh o p s for members for the Christmas Bazaar. December — members donated food baskets for needy Ukrainian families. Mary Fedak UNWLA CHAPTER 37 DETROIT 1976 Activities During 1976 members of Chapter 37 were involved in a number of programs sponsored by Ukrainian Community of Detroit to celebrate the America’s Bi centennial. In February - annual observance of Lesya Ukrainka’s birthday, Patroness of Chapter 37. In April som e of the Chapter members were involved in the Easter Exhibit and program held at the Whittier Towers, which was sponsored by Ukrain ian Bicentennial Committee of Detroit. C h ap ter p a rticip a ted in th e Farmington Community Bicentennial Ethnic Festival in May. A display of artifacts, embroideries, ceramics, wood carvings, pysanka demonstrations and items to sell. This is the seco n d year that Chapter members took active part in this Suburban Community Festival by in v o l v in g p e o p l e o f U k r a in ia n background living there. June was a busy month. Chapter participated in the Tri-Regional Member ship C onference held at Mercy C ollege in Detroit. This involved Regional Councils of Chicago, Cleveland and Detroit and our members were active in this SUA endeavor. Also, a membership dinner was held which concluded the activities of the Chapter before the vacation season . In A u g u st C h ap ter m em b ers participated in the Ukrainian Festival on the Riverfront, Downtown Detroit. The "Toss Booth” this year was sponsored by the Welfare Committee of the Regional Council and all Branches supported the effort by collecting items for the booth and help man it during the 3 day Festival. Month of October is traditionally SUA Regional Council month, and ’’Soyuzanka Week” involves all of the Branches of the Region. Chapter 37 had a display of its crafts projects, and Bonnie Katschanow on e of our members served as on e of the m odels in the Fashion presentation of Regional Dress of Ukraine’s many regions. This w as the highlite of the Souzanka Week program. Chapter 37 undertook a ’’FIRST” in our Ukrainian community - a Home Tour. This is a take off on the popular "Christmas Home Walk” tours in the Detroit and Suburbs area, which are usually sponsored as benefit projects to help the Detroit Symphony Museum or other organizations. Visits are arranged to outstanding historical or interesting hom es which are opened to the public at holiday time. Chapter 37 sponsored such a tour of a contemporary home with authentic Hutzul style decor adapted to modern living. Maria D roham ereski, an out standing "pysancharka” and "korovay” decorator, opened her beautiful home to members and gu ests of our Chapter. C lose to 50 persons of Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian background viewed the Hutzul treasures which adorn the home. Embroidered drapes, curtains, doilies, table cloths, ceramics, pysanky, dozen of wood inlaid items such as plates, picture frames, vine decanters, wall ca ses. Also, Hutzul dolls, kilyms and many other artifacts. Tea and Ukrainian pastries provided by members concluded the Home Visit. Members of Chapter 37 are deeply grateful to Mrs. Drohomereski for sharing her home and her Hutzul treasures. In so doing sh e gave so much joy and pleasure to th ose who part icipated on this memorable Sunday, D ecem ber 5, 1976, which also enriched our treasury to carry on the work of SUA. H o p e fu lly , o th e r p e o p le in our c o m m u n itie s w h o h a v e sim ila rly decorated hom es will be willing to open them to specially invited g u ests and share the rich cultural heritage of Ukraine in a pleasant hom e atmosphere. Anastasia Volker, Acting Pres. Ann Strokon, Press Secretary Activities of Chapter 58 - Detroit Michigan In April of 1976 Chapter 58 participated in Channel 5 (WTVS-TV) auction. Mem bers appeared in a group in Ukrainian blouses and received many c lo se camera shots. In May the Ukrainian Section of International Institute headed by Joanna D r a g in d a - R u lc h e s k y , s p o n s o r e d "Treasures of the Ukraine”; This was the Ukrainian Bicentennial Salute to the community. Forty show c a se s in the Hall of Nations depicted major periods of U k r a in ia n A r ts a n d C u lt u r a l’ development. Featured were oils, enam els, m osaics, copper etchings, wood cuts, sculpture, icons, embroidery, pysanky as well as dolls in traditional costum es. The exhibit was opened on a Sunday afternoon with an elaborate tea and party.
