In Memory of Iwanna Bencal The Scriptures say,' "God made us to know Him, to love Him, to serve Him in this world, and be happy with Him in the next” — how appropriate it is to the life of Iwanna Janet Ben cal. For she loved and served God and country very well. He called her to His heavenly abode in church, on the morning of January 11, 1977. What a blessed way to go! In her memory I shall give you a very brief outline of her life. Seventy-five years ago she was born to the family of Bilyk in Uhniw, Western Ukraine. It was their fourth child and they named her Parasia. Her father died when she was very young, in her mother struggled with her family. The oldest boy, George, left for America in 1901 to make his fortune. When Iwanna (Parasia or Janet) was old enough, he sent for her to come to America. He took good care of her and sent her to school to learn English. Being a bright child, she was quick to learn and acclimatize herself to the new world. When she married William Bencal, they rented an apart ment in the Bronx, New York, where she lived for the rest of her life. Her son Paul was their only child. He and his family reside in Bay Village, Ohio. With the passing of her brother George last year at the age of 92, her son and grandchildren are her only survivers. Her sister,Mary Davis, died in Michigan, and her other brother died in the military in Europe. Upon her mother’s death, she went back to Europe to set up a stone memorial on the family plot. What a loving memorial from a loving child After her seperation from her husband, she obtained em ployment with the Cancer Society of New York. She helped to comfort the patients who came for advice with this dreadful di sease. This work seemed very rewarding to Iwanna, for she had the ability to reassure them and helped them to have faith. She was with this organization until her retirement, with pension. Active in the Ukrainian Relief committee, she worked diligently to help the displaced Ukrainian people in Europe to get visas to come to the United States. Again she came to the aid of the people in need of help. As for her work in the U.N.W.L. of America, you are all familiar with it. Receipt the 50th Anniversary Award of the U.N.W.L. at that event rendered her a great honor, which she appreciated very much, and I was glad to witness it; for she was one of the very few so honored. She was not all that serious all the time. She had a great knack to entertain people. I’ll quote you one, which I shall never forget. Going to a U.N.W.L. of America convention in 1938, took four and a half to five hours to drive — from Jersey City to Philadelphia. In those days there was no heat in the cars. Iwanna, or Janet as we called her, entertained us with laughter and song during the entire trip. The laughter kept us warm; the singing kept us cheerful. It took my mind off the driving and made the long trip seem shorter. At the country home of my brother and sister-in-law, William and Anastasia Wagner, we had many good times— play ing cards, celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. She was a constant visitor there, spending weekends, vacations, and holidays where I would meet with her. Only last September, I saw her for the last time. We were her dinner guests at a restaurant and she looked fine. However, she must have had a premonition that her time was not for long, for only last summer, on her yearly visit to her son and his family, she gave him all of the necessary documents in case of her death. I can only remember her as a happy, outgoing person, full of energy and a desire to help others. She leaves us with a purpose in life; to give of ourselves, to serve others, and do it cheerfully. Eternal Rest grant unto her o Lord and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Petrunella Koster СПОНЗОРИ СТУДЕНТІВ У БРАЗІЛІЇ, ЯКИХ ПРИДБАВ 3-ІЙ ВІДДІЛ СУА У ФІНІКСІ, АРІЗОНА.
