OUR LIFE M O N T H L Y , published by Ukrainian National Women's League of America Vol. XXXIV April 1977 No. 4 Editor M arta Baczynsky Holyday Greetings. In the glorious tradition of Easter, we extend our best wishes to Honorary President Mrs. Lydia Burachyn- sky, our Regional Councils, to all our Branches, members far and near and friends. May the blessing and hope of the Resurrection strengthen our efforts to achieve our goals and aspir ations; may our labors bear fruit for the good of our na tion. In greeting and with love we extend our best wishes for the dawning o f a new free tomorrow to our brothers and sister in our homeland. C HR YSTO S VOSKRES MOTRIA KUSHNIR WOMAN VIEWS & NEWS WOMAN'S WORLD + On January 30, 1977 the National Board of Directors of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. endorsed the Equal Rights Amendment. The action stirred minimal, yet very vocal, negative response. A few of the adult members were so provoked that they went so far as to burn their uniforms in public squares— a tactic they certainly learned from their sisters at the opposite end of the political spectrum. By and large, however, the Board’s endorsement found fa vor with the membership of Girl Scouting. Many local Girl Scout councils had taken action to support the ERA years be fore the national body took its position. With the national deci sion, many councils that had not taken the issue under consi deration decided to pass pro-ERA motions. After passing the ERA endorsement, the National Board prepared a news release to inform the public, as well as its own membership, of its decision. The release stated that the motion "was greeted with enthusiastic applause and was passed in just 14 minutes." Dr. Gloria D. Scott, Girl Scout National President, was quoted as saying: "The rationale behind the passage of the motion follows the National Board decision last year that Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. must be actively involved in current issues which will have an impact on the lives of our girls as they ma ture into womanhood.” + Organizations concerned with civil liberties have responded to the Supreme Court decision against women's rights by initiating legislation which will prohibit discrimination against pregnant workers. In General E lectric v. Gilbert, the Supreme Court last December ruled that it is not illegal sex discrimin ation under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act for private em ployers to deny women with pregnancy-related disabilities the disability payments to other workers. One week after the G ilb ert decision, a two-day meeting was organized by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, AFL-CIO— who brought suit in the G ilb ert case— the American Civil Liberties Union and other concerned groups to decide on a common legislative strategy to counteract the de cision. Among the more than 100 people and 50 organizations who attended the meeting were feminists, labor, civil rights and law reform groups, as well as members of the staff of various Congresspersons. The initial meeting ended successfully. The participants agreed to form a "Campaign to End Discrimination against Pregnant Workers" (CEDPW) and to work for legislation over ruling the Supreme Court. During January a bill was drafted and approved which would require that pregnancy-related dis abilities be treated just like every other temporary disability. For most women— statistically, 95%— the period of time when they are physically unable to work because of pregnancy НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ, КВІТЕНЬ 1977 19
