OUR LIFE MONTHLY, 'published by Ukrainian JScitioual Women’s League of America Vol. XXXIII JANUARY No. 1 HELEN FOLYS LOTOTSKY On December 2, 1975, Helen Folys Lototsky, one of the most notable women in the history of the Ukrainian- American community passed away in the home of her son in West Sand Lake, New York. Her death is a great loss not only to the Ukrainian National Women's League of America for which she worked so selflessly, but to all Ukrainians. Helen Lototsky was born in 1894 in Western Ukraine. She was the daughter of Rev. Anton Folys, an ardent supporter and participant in Ukrainian causes. In 1912 she married Rev. Basil Dobush, and in the same year immigrated to the U.S. In 1918 when her husband died during a flu epidemic, she was left with three small A new day is b o rn ..... In a day or so, over the land where many of us were born, a bright star will shine, announcing the birth of The Son of God. As we begin our celebrations here, our thoughts will travel there, to that land; even the thoughts of those who have never seen that land, but who love it and dream about seeing it one day. To all those so far away, and to all those who will read these words we send our greeting upon this glorious occasion of Christ's Birth. We pray that the Holy Child will bless us all, grant success to our endeavors and allow us to witness the rise of the star of freedom. Helen Lototsky studied banking atthe American Institute of Banking and law at Columbia University and pursued a career in banking. In 1923 she married Mr. W olodymyr Lototsky,editorofthe Ukrainian Daily SVOBODA and AMERICA. Mrs. Lototsky attended the Congress of the Inter national Women's Council in Washington D.C. in 1925 as a member of the Ukrainian delegation. In this same year, along with others she saw a need to form a national organ ization of Ukrainian women in the U.S. and she helped to organize the Ukrainian National Women's League of America. She became its organizer and secretary at the age of 31. In 1932, UNWLA bought a large ethnographic collection from Ukraine and Mrs. Lototsky arranged to display it at the Chicago W orld's Fair in 1933. She helped organize the First Women's Congress in America and the World Federation of Ukrainian Women's Organizations. She served as a vice — president and acting president of WFUWO for many years. In 1943 she was elected President of UNWLA and headed this organization until 1965 when she was grant ed the title of Honorary President. Helen Lototsky was also the editor of OUR LIFE magazine for five years. She had represented UNWLA for many years in the National Council of Women and the General Federation of Women's Clubs. Helen Lototsky was a member of NCW delegation to the Congress of International Council of Women in Helsinki and Montreal. She was a member of the Board of the Ukr. Congress Committee of America, Board of Directors of the International Institute and United Ukr.-America Relief Committee. She was an aid to the GOP Nationalities Advisory Committee of the National Federation of Republican Women, and a public speaker at the GOP political rallies.
