M othe r — by Olena K ulchycka М а т и . Л ін о гр а в ю р а Олени Кульчицької.. VALENTYNA TKACHENKO Under the Wings Having said good-bye you left the ground. And the plane rose higher and higher. Silvery spaces rose all around The clouds — not I — became nigher. The wings are gleaming in silvery mist. Reflections in golden fields flying. To you I became a dot on the earth And finally vanished entirely. Now I cannot hear the motor's roar — Only my own heart pounding. My thoughts reach up to you once more I am against this parting.. I know, I know: time will play its part. And summer and flowers will die. And f will remain in your mind and heart: A dot under the boundless sky. Translated byTetiana Shevchuk We get letter D e a r E d ito r; I first heard and seen you magazine at our friends home... I liked it very much. A lot of interesting articles to read. I am an American born, but read in Ukrai nian. It is a little hard and takes me a while to read it. I see you have some good recipes, but some are in Ukrainian and are a little hard to translate for me. The poem by Taras Shevchenko was very touching. In our paper, The Record, they had Shevchenko as a Russian poet. I wrote to the Editor to have it corrected. It is an insult to our great poet... Most sincerely Eva Hnatow MY FIRST DICTIONARY. To order, write: "Ply" Coop, Ltd. 768 Queen Street West Toronto, Ontario, Canada THANK YOU NOTES... A m ost noble and rewarding practice in the. United States is the custom o f sending "Thank-you- notes". People express apprecia tion for the many things others do for them, be it a gift, a visit, a good deed, with a written statem ent which shows the recipients pleasure. Thank you is perhaps the m ost p o pular phrase in our language, but when it is written, it relays som ething more than just the obligatory response to a favor on the part o f another. Thank you notes, like Christmas cards solidify friendships and in a pay, are an indication o f our knowledge o f social etiquette. In our organizational life, thank you notes, letters or published acknow ledge ments are the threads which weave goodw ill and sustain cooperation. It is o f im portance that this practice be cultivated — it enhances the good name o f o u r organization. OUR COVER Our cover this month solutes motherhood — its joys and sorrows, its totally pure and unselfish love. Mother and child — a marvelous subject for the artist to draw, for the writer to write about. The picture we feature, of the Hucul woman and child, is a photograph, the artist unknown, which we found in the magazine NEW HOUSE (Nova Chata) #10, 1035. This magazine, which was published in Lwiw, prior to World War II, was edited by Mrs. Lidia Burachynska. From a rather worn copy of this magazine our good friend and talented photographer W olodym yr Hrycyn has s killfu lly reproduced the touching photo on our cover. We thoroughly enjoy looking through the well worn issues of NOVA CHATA. For us, they bring treasured memories. It would be well worth if our young people would take a look at some of the issues. They would find a world of interesting subjects ranging from interior decorating to the latest literary critiques of that day. 24 НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ, ТРАВЕНЬ 1975 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
