OUR LIFE M O N TH LY, ‘published by Ukrainian iational Women’s League of America Vol. XXXII. MARCH, 1975 No. 3 With the approaching holy days of Easter, we wish to extend to all our readers and their families the joyous greeting "CHRYSTOS VOSKRES " THE GOLDEN JUBILEE The XVII Convention of the UNWLA has marked the beginning of an unprecedented year for the organiza tion — the 50th Anniversary of its founding. A half a century is a long time to test the strenght and durability of any endeavor. UNWLA has withstood the test of time through the successful attainment of set goals, development of workable programs and the unification of thousands of Ukarinian women in a spirit of harmony and cooperation. It should be underlined with pride, that UNWLA is the only Ukrainian organization in the United States which celebrates a Golden Jubilee. Amid the fanfare and the applause for past accomplishments, it is necessary to pause and give thought to actual programs, active now and for the future, which are aimed to insure another 50 years of success for the organization. 1. Increased membership. Although UNWLA boasts of thousands of Ukrainian women as members, there is a great number of women outside its ranks. The important task for now and the future is to bring them within the sphere of membership of the organization, through programs designed to interest individuals and allow them to develop their potential. 2. Common goal. UNWLA is an organization of Ukrainian women, serving the interest of Ukrainian women and the Ukrainian society here and in our homeland. It is important to point out that within the framework of the organization every women has the opportunity to find a field of self expression and contribute as much as she can to the Ukrainian community. 3. Information. Through its well developed programs — cultural, educational, etc.the organiza tion tries to insure that the wealth of current informa tion concerning aspects of Ukrainian life here and in the Ukraine be readily available to its members. Due Women — Political Prisoners. In 1975 — International Women's Year, our attention is turned to our sisters in the Ukraine, whose demands for their basic human rights have resulted in their imprison ment by the Soviet government. The brutal and demeaning treatment of them, the harsh sentences imposed upon them are contrary to all principles of justice. Iryna Stasiv-Kalynets, a writer of exceptional talent, was sentenced to 6 years imprisonment and 3 years exile. Stefania Shabatura — artist, sentenced to 5 years of hard labor, 3 years exile. . Nadia Svitlychna-Shumuk — philologist — sentenced to 4 years of hard labor. The above are an example of the women — prisoners we know about. How many more are suffering in Soviet labor camps about whom we know nothing. Thoughts on International Women's Year "International Women's Year Is not an occasion for women alone. It can be and should be, an occasion for the united efforts of all of us — men and women — to ensure that fundamental human rights and respon sibilities are shared by all humanity." Kurt Waldheim Secretary — General of the United Nations to its strenght and prestige, UNWLA is in a favorable position, through its network of public relation, to impart correct, current information about Ukraine to the American people. 4. Museum of Folk Art. With the purchase by UNWLA of a building in New York City, the survival and growth of the Museum of Folk Art has been insured. This has been a great step toward the preservation of our cultural heritage. 5. Welfare Action. The far reaching scholarship program has been a source of pride to the organiza tion for many years. Welfare aid to the needy and aged, though worked into an effective program, needs more study and volunteers. 6. Education. One of the most successful programs of the UNWLA is the organization of pre school nurseries. This program also includes the training of teachers for these jobs. This is an under taking the must continue to expand and develop. 24 НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ, БЕРЕЗЕНЬ 1975 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
