O U R L I F E M O N TH LY, published by Ukrainian National Womens League of America Vol. XXXII JUNE 1975 International Women’s Year 1975 The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother. — The Rev. Theodore Hesburgh Editorial One of the most cherished privileges guaranteed to the people of the United States by the Constitution is the freedom of the press. How many readers, if any, of daily newspapers, magazines, journals or any other publication are fully aware of that fact while scanning the printed word. This is another comfort we are born into, or move into, and it is taken for granted, like the water from a faucet. Any freedom carries with it its weight in responsi bility. Conscientious reporting has as its aim the correct presentation of facts. Any interpretation of facts is an opinion, which we can judge right or wrong, agree or disagree with. OUR LIFE is for the most part an organizational magazine. It is primarily concerned with presenting the workings of Ukrainian National Women's League of America, advancing its aims, supporting and promoting its goals. Yet, we fully realize, that our organization has as members, women, aware of today's ever changing world and their role in the struggle to gain a strong foothold in it. We therefore cannot shut our eyes to any aspect of their lives; welfare of the family, raising of children, struggle for better wages and better jobs, fear of rising crime rate, the problems of drugs, abortion, rape. For 50 years U. N. W. L. A. has been a guiding force, advancing the self realization of the Ukrainian women, preserving our national identity, our cultural heritage. Now, our organization has entered a new phase — the struggle for women's liberation, be it here in the United States or in our native land, where our sisters are denied their basic human rights. OUR LIFE will continue to uphold the primary objectives of our organization; objectives which cemented its foundation and promoted sucessful growth No. 6 Editor Marta Baczynsky for half a century. However, as the role of the woman changes, and she steps up to take her place as an equal citizen in her community, we feel it is our obligation to also expand our coverage and bring the community before her, in the way of conscientious reporting and in opinion. MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN We, the members of Ukrainian National Women’s League of America are faced in this Jubillee Year with a formidable task — to double the membership of our organization. In an article (Our Life#10, I973) Mrs. Iwanna Rozankowsky, pointed out that there are more than 100 thousand women of Ukrainian descent, which could be members of the organization, but are not. This year, In particular, the opportunities for a membership drive are great, because we have an uncommon chance to acquaint our society with U.N.W.L.A. through our participation in the United States Bicentennial celebration. An example of such activity can be the Branch in Utica which has received a $1500 grant from the Bicentennial Committee to create a "pysanky workshop". The Ohio Region has organized a committee for the preservation of Ukrainian cultural heritage and is actively searching through Ukrainian communities for exponents. The New England Region, through the efforts of its Public Relations Chairman, has won the privalage of having Ukrainian history taught in Connecticut schools. The positive attitude of each individual member, however, has the greatest bearing upon the member ship campaign. Each of us must advertise the positive aspects of our organization and if other women will see our satisfaction, it is inevitable they will want to join. The two main considerations of the membership campaign is the a) formation of new branches, b) strenghtening existing ones. The campaign will be conducted throught the efforts of committees organized by the Membership Chairmen of each Regional Council. The committees will present a plan of action suitable to their particular region. In turn Membership Chairmen of branches will organize committees within their branches to put the plan into effect. We must remember that the outcome of this drive will equal the amount of effort and enthusiasm we put into it.
