OUR LIFE MONTHLY, published by Ukrainian National Womens League of America Vol. XXXII APRIL, 1975 No. 4 PERSPECTIVE FOR THE FUTURE At the XVII Convention of UNWLA last December, Nadia Deychakiwsky addressed the delegates, dis cussing the "Perspectives for the future" of our organization. Following are excerpts from the speech, in translation. "In the life of a person the attainm ent of 50 years means maturity; the individual has gained wisdom, reached set aims and knows where she is going. For an organization or an institution 50 years is a relatively young age. In the last half a century UNWLA has achieved many things, but there has been much experimentation, searching and coincidence. Yet all these provided experience and insight, w ithout Which it would be impossible to plan for the future." "In order for UNWLA to truly become a force of itre n g h t and influence, the organization must first of all jndergo an internal change and treat itself and its work seriously. In order to deserve respect from others, we nust first respect ourselves." "M any of our members do not treat their member ship in the UNWLA seriously but rather half-heartedly. It is a known fact that many women do not take advantage of their affiliation nor execute their responsibilities." (From her personal experience as a mem ber o f an older Branch and later as a mem ber o f a ju n io r Branch, Lidia Deychakiwsky makes the follow ing com parison — ) "In an older Branch, initiative and the work lies in the hands of a few active (usually the same ones) members. In the junior Branch the work is more evenly distributed. In an older Branch national duty and sacrifice ranks uppermost. In the Junior Branch there is an accepted understanding that an affiliation with an organization demands that each member do her fair share of the work involved. There is also the demand for certain compensations, such as the benefits of a social life, opportunity to gain specific knowledge or express one's talents or interests." "M ost of the younger members of the organization work on the "give and take" principle, while the older concentrate on the "give" only. (On the problem of recruiting new members.) "One of the first im portant steps toward recruiting a new member is supplying inform ation. The prospective International Women’s Year 1975 "It is women who give birth to children... women are more than half o f the w orld's population.. We cannot hope to create the necessary conditions for grow th while leaving aside half o f the human resources required for that g ro w th ." Heivi L. Sipila, UN A ssistan t S ecretary-G eneral fo r Social Developm ent and H um anitarian Affairs. member must be informed about UNWLA, its philo sophy, aims, programs etc. It must be stressed that members of our organization are the spiritual elite of the Ukrainian socity because they wish to serve their com m unity, contributing to its positive growth." "Ukrainian rebirth needs a new breed of people, the spiritual aristocrats." Such should be our attitude about ourselves. A new member should come into the organization with the belief that she does so because of the noble ideals within her, not because of some political affiliation or because it seems the right thing to do." (On strenghtening our com m itm ents to ourselves). "If one were to ask-w here lies the weakest point in our organization — the answer would be — within the goodness of the heart of our members. When there is too much heart and emotions, there is usually very little cold analysis. Its a known fact, UNWLA is always ready to serve (yes, we are ready to serve our nation, but wisely and effectively through an organized action), to collect funds for other organizations, committees or institutions. This seems to have become a habit. But did anyone ever hear of another organization staging an event, the benefits of which were to be donated to UNWLA? That even sounds funny. Are our goals negligible? We therefore must begin a new era in our organization. The first step has been taken, which is the call to our members to work w ithin the fram ework of our programs and to direct the benefits due our com m unities through the growth and development of UNWLA."
