OUR LIFE M O N T H LY , published by Ukrainian National Womens League of America Vol. XXXI. NOVEMBER , 1974 No.10 On November 29, 30 and December 1, 1974 the Ukrainian National Women's League of America, Inc. will begin celebrat ing its 50th Anniversary with a Jubilee Convention at the Statler- Hilton Hotel in New York City. When, in 1935, Ukrainian immigrant women came together to form the Ukrainian National Women's League of America their aims were; to preserve their national culture, provide mutual aid, and assist THEIR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN Ukraine in their struggle for basic human rights. In the ensuing years, the U. N. W. L. A. through its III branches has given countless exhibits and demonstrations of Ukrainian folk arts and customs, all over the United States, has provided material aid for hundreds of widows, orphans and aged, and in a special program, following World War II, sponsored and relo cated 'new' immigrants coming from displaced persons camps in Germany. From the day of its inception, the Ukrainian National Women's League has continually endorsed and joined in actions opposing communism and supporting the rights of all peoples to freedom of speech, religion and selfdetermination. The Ukrainian National Women's League of America became a member of the National Council of Women of the United States in 1952, and our representatives have taken part in all National Council meetings since then. Our Organization has benefited greatly by its National Council membership, through the opportunities to learn of the aims and programs of other women's groups and take part in National Council programs, and through the many personal contacts our members have made. In 1975 we will be honoring our pioneer members who came, with extremely limited resources, to a new land and with unstinting labor and faith established families, churches, organiza tions, and educated children who, instilled with a love for their cultural heritage, an unfaltering belief in Almighty God, and a deep faith in this country of their birth which had given their parents unlimited opportunities for a life of fulfillment, have swelled the ranks of America's most loyal citizens. The aims and purposes of the Ukrainian National Women's League have not changed in the past 50 years. Our Branches continue with their programs of social service, cultural exhibits and dem onstrations, and acquainting the public with the true facts about Ukraine and Ukrainians. Our Bicentennail plans are being made locally through our Branches in coopera tion with community com m ittees. In some areas committees are already formed, in others plans are progressing slowly. In observance of Inter national Women's Year, the U. N. W. L. A. will publish, in English, a biographical dictionary of out standing Ukrainian women. One of our Manhattan Branches annually sponsors a show of the work of women artists. For IWY 1975 they plan a much larger exhibit of the works of Ukrainian women artisans. With the maturing of the new generation of U. N. W. L. A. club women we look forward to even greater participation in the programs of the National Council of Women. ALEXANDRA L. RIZNYK UNWLA Representative to NCW October, 17, 1974 From the Editor's desk... The November issue of Our Life should reach our readers at the onset of the XVII Convention of UNWLA. Members of our organiza tion, hailing from many far away places of this vast land are expected to attend the planned sessions of the Convention in great numbers. Women who have pioneered this organization together with those who have for many years given their time and loving effort to it, and the young, who have but recently joined the ranks of UNWLA, will find this gathering a rare opportunity within НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ — ЛИСТОПАД, 1974 25 U.
