P resident D oro th y Everett, P ast President M ary Fedak ACTIVITIES OF BRANCH 32 OF NEWARK UNWLA SEPT.-DEC. 1973 In the length of tim e betw een Septem ber and Decem ber of 1973, our branch held th ree executive m eet ings. In Septem ber, our m em bers spon sored a Bilingual Conference for branches 32, N ew ark, 72 New Y ork, 40, and 52. Our m em ber, Mrs. M ary Rohorwsky, rem inisced about her m o th e r’s hard days as an early U krain ian im m igrant in the U krainian com m unity in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Mrs. Rosalie Polche of B ranch 72 of New York then related her m other’s ex periences. A guest speaker, Mrs. Ge rard Muench, gave a lecture on E th nic A w arenes in the present time. An interesting discussion followed and closed w ith the resolution to in crease better and closer contacts am ong all sister branches. A lunch eon then followed w hich was enjoyed by all. , O ur annual bus-trip took us through scenic A utum n countryside to W est P oint to sightsee and enjoy th e Dress Parade. We then stopped off at B ear M ountain, N. Y. for sup- der to properly prepare the child (for formal schooling’; parents and the wider community should be informed through all the me dia, of all the positive aspects of Ukrainian Nursery Schools in order to enlist all possible assist ance in fulfilling the UNWA Ed ucation Committe’s call — “50 Nursery Schools for the UN- WLA’s 50th Anniversary.” per and a w alk in th e woods. A 50-50 raffle was held on th e w ay hom e and door prizes handed out to ticket w in ners. Mrs. M ary Rohowsky presented her oil paintings at the A rt Show spon sored by the O kruzhna Rada in No vem ber along w ith Mrs. D orothy Lo- sowyj selling U krainian articles. Christm as was celebrated in De cem ber w ith our annual Christm as P arty. The year of 1:974 was ended w ith elections of our new board m eeting at w hich Mrs. D orothy Lo- sowyj becam e President, Mrs. Dolores Salabun, V ice-President, Mrs. Olga Smook, Treausrer, Mrs. Olga M asel- ko„ Secretary, and Mrs. Stephie Brenycz, Organizer. D o r o th y L o s o w y j President, Branch 32 SEMI-ANNUAL REPORT OF BR. 60 OF UNWLA Sept. 1973 to April 1974 In September 1973 a regular meeting was held at the home of Mrs. Helen Petlowaney. A ribbon rose and bow workshop was con ducted by Jennie Bochar. An drew Michniak, of the Ukrainian American Youth presented re cent publications in English of Ukrainian literature. Ukrainian recipes somplied by I. Kashubyn- ska were sold, as well as trays with Ukrainian pysanky design and “Ukrainians in America” by M. Kuropas. A nominating com mittee was chosen. September 29th was the scene of a bi-lingual luncheon confer ence held at St. Josaphat Hall in Parma, Ohio, in the Regional Council rooms, UNWLA branch es from Detroit as well as our national vice-president Alexan dra Riznyk were guests. “I Re member Mama” was pressnted by Mrs. Mary Fedak, president Br. 60. “Ethnic Identity” was in terpreted by Mr. Eli Ferenchik, Director of Ethnic Heritage Cen ter, Cleveland Community Col lege, and “Ukrainian American Woman” by Mrs. Anastasia Vol- ker, national organizational chairman of UNWLA. A November membership meeting was held at the home of Membership chairman, Stell Le- michuk. A potluck supper with entertainment by Irene Kulick and her daughter on their ban- duras with selections of Ukrain ian folk songs. A sum o p $200 was appropriated for educational and. civic projects. Copies of “Traditional Ukrainian Cookery” by S. Steohisin were sent to four public libraries, as well as 2-year subscriptions of the “Forum.” Donations to “Our Life,” to Br. 12 Kindergarten, to the orphan age in Philadelphia. Our traditional “Swiatia Ve- chera” was held in January 1974 with intsallation of officers. This annual potluck supper for members and guests is the high light of the year. Each member is assigned a different tradition al Christmas Eve dish which she learns to prepare, from fish to pumpushki. A pysanky demonstration and classes have been conducted by Jennie Bochar, thus keeping our heritage active and alive and known. Mary Fedak, Past Pres.
