It is hoped to hold other p ro gram s in th e future. C H A PT E R 37 N E W S Chapter 37 began its work in Sep tember on a sad note with the report of the death of Anna Lucky, eighty- two year old, former active member. During the past fifteen years Anna was our adopted senior citizen whom we visited, telephoned, sent greeting cards and took to meetings as a guest. President Myrtle Slaby and Vice- president Anastasia Volker partici pated in the Cleveland-Detroit Con ference for English-Speaking chap ters called “The Ukrainian-Ameri- can Women” on September 29, 1973. On October 13 and 14th Myrtle Slaby attended the Bi-Annual Meet ing of the UNWLA National Board substituting for the Detroit Regional Council President, Olena Liskiwsky. Later in the month members parti cipated in the Detroit Regional Council’s district program “Woman hood Today” with four chapters. An astasia Volker spoke on the panel: Women Are Discriminated Against By The Law. Legal aspects of a woman’s plight relating to Social Security, retirement annuities, and application for loans were discussed. In the musical interlude that follow ed Donia Demray sang a Ukrainian song which revealed why discrimi nation against women begin. At Chapter 37’s Ukrainian Blouse Social after the November meeting, pictures of the members were taken for the 1974 National Convention Book. On Noivem'ber 23, 1973, our mem ber Olga Shuster who recently re turned from a two-year Overseas Teacher assignment in Germany gave a Song Recital at the Detroit Institute of Arts Lecture Hall. Olga, a soprano, presented a program of songs sung in German, French and Ukrainian. Chapter 37’s usual Christmas Par ty with gifts and carolling was held for the eleven ailing and aged resi dents of Mrs. Cheff’s home for wom en as a Memorial for Anna Lucky who lived there for fifteen years and passed away on September 3, 1973. A contribution to the OUR LIFE Press Fund was also made in memory of Mrs. A. Lucky. A Christmas party and gaily wrapped handmade gifts by Chapter 37’s Comfy Knitters were enjoyed by the disturbed-teenaged girls a.t Girl’s Town, Belleville, Michigan. Anne Strokon, past president, in vited Chapter 37 to celebrate “Svia- ty V e c h e r ” at her Starlite Restau rant in January. The twelve dishes were prepared and served by the members. Kay Zojac, a new member, experienced a different method of preparing the fish dish by serving on the fish-preparation committee. The members and their families wel comed our two new members Bon nie Katischanow and Kay Zojac and their families to the bi-annual cele bration of Ukrainian Christmas cus toms. Later in January a memorial of words and music for its memlber An na Nakoneczny, who passed away on January 21, 1974, was sponsored by Chapter 37 on Oresta Karalash’s ra dio program “Soul of Ukraine.” For the annual observance of the birthday of Chapter 37’s patron Le sya Ukrainka, Mrs. Maria Pavlosa- vich, distant relative of Bohdan Lep- ky, was the guest speaker. She re lated episodes from the life of Le sya Ukrainka and read some of her poems in Ukrainian. Since Chapter 37 is a member of the Federation of Women’s Clubs of Metropolitan Detroit, the members attended and were sponsors of its scholarship fund raising project, the Spring Fashion Show and Luncheon at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial. Three of Chapter 37’s Ukrainian can didates received FWCMD scholar ships in the past. Later in March Chapter 37 had its fund raising pro ject, a Pysanka Bingo. With the coming of Easter Chapter members were active in Pysanka Workshops. Anastasia Volker con ducted a Pysanka Workshop at the Wilson School in Ferndale, Michi gan, for the 4th and 5th grade class. The children had paper drives to earn money to pay for the workshop supplies. They presented Mrs. Volker with a gift to the Detroit Regional Council's Building Fund for the Home for Senior Citizens. Later in terested parents had Mrs. Volker conduct a workshop for them. Myrtle Slaby presented a work shop at the April meeting of Alpha Delta Kappa, a national teacher’s sorority, with the help of Mrs. Jaro slava Sena, past president of the De troit Regional Council. While Myr tle was in one room conducting a Pysanka workshop, Jaroslava was in an other room teaching Ukrainian stitchery. To show their apprecia tion. the sorority presented them with a gift for the Building Fund. Two Pysanka Workshops at the Drayton Avenue Presbyterian Church were presented. Myrtle Sla by worked with the Senior High School Group and the Lois Circle for Women. Many interesting Pysan- ky were created and a delightful ethnic cultural exchange ensued. Chapter 37 members attended th3 two Leadership Training Sessions sponsored by the UNWLA Detroit Regional Council on May 16 a.nd 18. Mrs. David Saks, past president of Chapiter 80, a registered Parliamen tarian presented well-prepared ses sions on the Convention: credentials, standing rules, program, resolutions, and different ways of voting. In memory of Mary Husak a for mer member of Chapter 37 and an active Comfy Knitter who knitted many Chapter gifts and UNWLA fund-raising projects throughout her illness, a gift to the Our Life Press Fund was made by Chapter 37. In June the members greeted a new member, Julia Pushkow and made plans for the Chapter’s partici pation in the UNWLA Detroit Re gional Council’s booth at the Detroit Ethnic Festival on August 2, 3 and 4 before recessing for the summer.
