OUR LIFE M ONTHLY, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America Vol. XXX. DECEMBER, 1973 No. 11 3 0 t h A n n i v e r s a r y o f O U R L IF E By Mary Dushnyck Another milestone has been reached by OUR LIFE magazine (Nashe Zhytia) official publica tion of UNWLA. January 1974 marks the 30th anniversary of this leading Ukrainian women’s journal in the free world. It all began with UNWLA ar ticles in the two foremost Ukrainian newspapers in the USA, America and Svoboda; then, in 1939, a page began to appear in America, entitled “UNWLA News” (Visty SUA), whose editor was Helen Lotot- sky. During the ensuing five years hopes for a UNWLA pub lication never died, and finally in January 1944 an 8 -page issue of OUR LIFE made its debut on the Ukrainian journalistic scene as the first Ukrainian women’s publication in the USA, with Claudia Olesnicky as its editor. In 1946, upon the resignation of Mrs. Olesnicky, Mrs. Lototsky became editor, in cooperation with an editorial board. How ever, with her responsibilities as president of the UNWLA tak ing up most of her time, it was necessary to find a full-time edi tor. The UNWLA was indeed fortunate to avail itself, in 1951, of the services of Lydia Bura- chynska, a well-known journal ist who had arrived recently in America, having fled her native land before the Communist on slaught. OUR LIFE developed even tually into a magazine of 32 glossy pages, often 40, with tren chant editorials and topical ar ticles, interviews, art illustra tions, organization news and photographs. There was some thing for the women interested in folk or fine arts, literature, cooking, embroidery, education, rearing of children, the wom en’s movement and community life on general. Remembrances from our past and hopes for the future, not only for ourselves but for our persecuted brethren in Ukraine, nurtured the UNWLA goal of preserving our precious cultural heritage. Several pages in English are read avidly by the American-born, among whom are third and fourth generation members. After 21 years as editor of OUR LIFE, Mrs. Burachynska, with added duties as UNWLA President and recurring ill health, was forced to relinquish the editorship. She was succeded in May 1972 by Ulana Liubovych, a Ukrain ian writer who had served a Communist-imposed sentence in Kazakhstan. With each new edi tor, OUR LIFE has undergone progressive changes in format and content. So now we have Letters to the Editor, a children’s page, Eng lish summaries of major events and significant articles, semi annual reports of branches by regions (instead of individual ly), embroidery instructions in English, and a new cover design with modern art reproductions and thematic illustrations or photographs. On its 30th jubilee OUR LIFE is a publication of which the UNWLA can be justly proud. To insure its future, the UNWLA leadership has undertaken to raise through a Press Reserve Fund campaign the sum of $50,000 by November 1974, the 50th anniversary of th^- UN WLA. As of this writing (in No vember 1973) less than 25% of the goal has been reached. There fore, branches and members are asked to concentrate on this phase of UNWLA activity and help their organization and pub lication. To stimulate interest in the drive, branches are contend ing for top honors as contribut ors. Also, non-member readers and friends of OUR LIFE are asked to participate in this worthwhile effort, and all are urged to support it with sub scriptions and meaningful ma terial to increase the value of our publication. With Russifica tion rampart in Ukraine, it be hooves all of us to preserve and expand this important link among Ukrainian womanhood throughout the world. To OUR LIFE, its editor, and all connected with it, Mnohaya Lita!
