OUR LIFE MONTHLY, ‘published by Ukrainian National Womens League of America Vol. X X X . ______________________________ M AY, 1973 Fam ine in U kraine - 19 3 3 The U krainian Community is gathering, in memorial observ ances and mass protests, to com memorate the deaths of millions o f th e ir brothers and sisters. 1973 marks the 40th anniversary o f the famine in Ukraine. More than 6 m illion people died of starvation in a country which abounded in harvests su fficie n t not only to feed her own popul a tio n , but also to rank her among the leaders in the world export m arket o f wheat. In 1932, soon a fte r the h a r vest, detailed plans fo r the requi sitioning of every kind of crop were imposed on the Ukrainian peasantry. In fu rth e r retaliation fo r outbursts of unrest, which followed forced collectivization and economic centralization (the U krainian Department of A g r i culture was abolished) the Coun cil o f People’s Commissars of the Ukrainian 'SSR, under direct pressure fro m Moscow, resolved in December, 1932 to immedi ately stop supplies to certain lo calities and in te rru p t all govern ment and commercial a c tiv ity there; to close the governmental and cooperative shops ,and w ith draw all merchandise fro m th e m ; to fo rb id tra d in g in es sential consumer goods; to re fuse any credit to the popula tio n ; to act m ilita rily thro ugh out the kolhosps (collective farm s) removing fro m them the “ counter-revolutionary ele ments who engage in sabotage.” Mass protests against th is crime were organized in New Y o rk and many other cities. A Memorandum was delivered to the W hite House by the U k ra in ian Organizations in New Y o rk on November 15, 1933, citin g the reports of Isaac Don Levine, W ill D urant and others. The U N W L A prepared a pamphlet which was widely distributed to government officials and the general public. Numerous p u b li cations on the subject o f the famine appeared in many places. Collections of depositions or a ffid a vits have been made by numerous individuals and in s ti tutions — among others, by the B ritis h A nti-S lavery Society. The collections were utilized as source m aterial by many w r it ers, among them, A lb e rt K. Her- lin g fo r his book TH E SOVIET S LAVE EM PIRE (N. Y. 1951). The public observance of the 40th anniversary of th is mass murder by enforced famine serves to remind the world of the true nature of international Communism. APHORISMS BY H R YH O R IY SKOVORODA To him whose heart is aching, the whole world seems to be in tears. * The value of tim e is fu lly known only a fte r i t has passed. * You serve yourself best when you walk fir m ly on the road of common sense. * E ve ryth in g passes away, but love remains. T H E COURT Vasyl Symonenko (1935—1963) (Translated by M. Bohachevsky-Chomiak) Sections sat sternly at the table, Notes crouched in corners, carefully inclined, Quotations w ith fixed bayonets stared sharply A t the defendant who was being tried. The circular peered through his glasses, The audience huddled close, Instructions leaped out ghostlike From the wise wires of the phones. The sections hissed — “ the defendant is fo re ig n !” The circular croaked — “ she’s not fro m here.” The notes piped in — “ was never heard of.” The audience, shocked, screamed. The circular looked sternly at the court And re-established silent rapport. They executed the defendant r ig h t away — The sanctimonious clauses carried the day. In vain did the defendant swear Her innnocence. I t could not m a tte r there. The court was logical and s tric t, In no known category did she f i t — She was a new idea.
