A t th e o th er end o f th e scale, a w ork in g m an earns about $42 a m on th ou t o f w h ich h e p a y s about $5 fo r lo d g in g s. “People on t h is w a g e ” A n n a K olesn ik said, “h a v e a c a ta stro p h ic a lly low stan d ard o f liv in g .” A S o v ie t smart m u st w ork 2— 3 hours to b uy one pound o f b u tte r and a dozen eg g s, and 183 h ours to b u y a su it.
